Fun Facts

I am very passionate about organizing and participating in Model United Nations conferences. Ever since I started participating in these as a high school student I have enjoyed the communication, research, and debate skills that these events teach. I am also a big Lord of the Rings fan, and I enjoy playing piano in my spare time.

About Me

I am a history major at the University of California, Berkeley, where I just completed my first semester with a 4.0. I was raised in San Jose and have loved living in the Bay Area ever since. After I graduate I would like to teach for a few years through Teach for America, and later move on to law school (hopefully at Stanford!).

During my senior year of high school I worked for a Kumon Math and Reading Center in San Jose, where I tutored youth of all ages, from kindergarteners to high school students. I helped my tutees with arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and English reading-comprehension/california/san-francisco">reading comprehension. As an experienced essay writer, I also assist students in writing position papers for Model United Nations conferences, helping them to understand difficult concepts and to create logical research papers based on them. Through my involvement in the 4-H organization, I led a public speaking project for the youth of my club for six years. Here, I taught the basics of addressing an audience, creating a cohesive presentation, and constructing great visual aids.

I like to view the issue that I am helping a student resolve from his or her own perspective. Whether it is a math problem or an SAT question, I aim to find the exact area that my tutee needs help so that I can cater my time with him or her to that specific need. I also help each student adopt the right mindset behind solving problems of various formats. For example, when tutoring a student on SAT questions, my first goal is to help them see the reasoning behind every question - to help them understand why it is on the test in the first place and what the student will exhibit about his or her own knowledge when answering it. Once this is established, I go through the math problem or the reading passage and help them detect the details and nuances that can make big differences in such tests.
