Fun Facts

I love language. You-tube videos showing topics like the evolution of English from Proto-Indo-European, the great vowel shift, and linguistic relativity fascinate me. In fact, I always introduce mathematics as a language; it is the language we use to describe our world. This perspective fosters a more holistic approach to understanding mathematics and enables the student to make connections to mathematical ideas outside of a specific problem. BTW, the PIE root "smei" gives us smile & miracle!

About Me

I retired from a decade plus career as a high school math teacher and moved in with my son to help with my grandkids. As teaching is my passion, I became a tutor. To my delight, tutoring is like teaching with all of the rewards, but none of the frustrations! I look forward to sharing my experience as a teacher, which includes a variety of learning techniques and methods as well as a vast knowledge of the high school math curriculum.

Experience

As a Florida high school math teacher, I taught all grades and every subject up to calculus. I was the Department Chair at Miami Beach Senior High School, which gave me a greater insight into the curriculum and other teaching methods. I offered tutoring to all students after school every year I taught high school. Upon coming to Texas, I broadened this experience by tutoring not only high school math, but students at all levels and subjects including test prep.

Approach

Whether I am with a student for one session or a series of sessions, I treat the subject as part of a curriculum and I endeavor to place each problem within a larger context. The student then learns one topic which can be used for many problems rather than many seemingly disparate problems. Often a student knows a concept, but does not recognize it during a test. I teach key words and phrases which can be used to identify types of problems, thus giving students control and confidence.
