Meet Our Fort Worth Tutor and TCU Alum Matthew H!

Welcome back to another one of our tutor spotlights! This week, the spotl ight is on Matthew H., one of our Fort Worth, TX tutors. He graduated from Texas Christian University in 2011, and is currently working as a claims examiner with Wellington Claims Service while going for his Master's degree in Architecture at UT-Arlington. This spotlight is a three-part article featuring an interview with Matthew, his student Lanning, and Lanning's mother Julia. Read below to find out more about their experience with Frog Tutoring!

Frog Tutoring: Why did you choose to become a tutor for Frog Tutoring?
Matthew:  I chose to be a tutor because I enjoy helping people to achieve their goals. I appreciate that a student would want to go the extra mile to learn more and/or get better academically. Even if it is the parent "forcing" the student to do better, it shows that they care and that is something that I think should be recognized. I am more than happy to assist in helping a student improve, it is exciting to see the progress and know that I have made a difference. I know that I have needed help improving at times, and I also excel in some areas so I think it is important for me to share that.

FT: What has been one of your most memorable experiences at FrogTutoring so far?
Matthew: My most memorable experience so far has been seeing the joy on a student's face when they reported a much higher passing grade in a class they were previously failing. I remember how proud the parent was to hear the news. That is what motivates me.

FT: f you could give a piece of advice to your students and other FrogTutoring students, what would it be?
Matthew: Help your tutor to help you. You have to be honest with yourself about what you really struggle with, and try to work hard to focus on those areas even though they are probably not your favorite. If your tutor gives you advice, try to apply it in class or while working on homework at home by yourself as well. I am sure this will increase your chances of being as successful as you can be.

FT: If you could have any person (living, dead, or fictional) as a tutor, who would it be and why?
Matthew: My grandfather. Even though he has recently passed, he was the most influential person to my academic success. He was always there, even through college, to lend help on homework and gave me some good advice that I still use today on how to manage classwork and balance fun with studying and making good grades.

FT: You’re a tutor in Fort Worth,TX. What do you think is your must do/see experience in Fort Worth (or the DFW area)?
Matthew: I think there are several must see experiences in the DFW area. My favorite, if you are around during the fall, is the Texas State Fair. But year round you should definitely visit the Perot museum and the Dallas World Aquarium.

Frog Tutoring: What brought you to Frog Tutoring in particular?
Julia:  Our son, Lanning, who is now a freshman at Paschal High School, was behind in several subjects due to illness (routinely 20 absences per year), and needed help catching up, especially in math and reading.

FT: Do you believe Matthew has helped Lanning achieve his educational objectives?
Julia: Matthew has been an enormous help! Lanning will no longer let me help him or monitor his assignments, but he's happy to work with Matthew. Lanning was just glancing through difficult vocabulary terms for his human geography class, but since he's been studying with Matthew he has made 90's on the tests. Matthew is very, very helpful even when he's just watching Lanning complete work! He really enjoys having Matthew help him, and frankly, I hate to think of what we'd do without Matthew. His calm demeanor and pleasant disposition have proven to be priceless. Lanning much prefers working with Matthew than with his slightly excitable mother.

FT: How would you personally rate FrogTutoring in terms of professionalism, attitude, and commitment on the part of the tutors?
Julia: Except for one blip, we have been extremely pleased with Frog Tutoring. We've used Frog for four or five years. We were even able to have "an emergency" session for my daughter  three years ago when she was lost and frustrated on a particular assignment in AP Physics. The tutor came twice, talked her through and she passed with an A.

FT: Would you recommend FrogTutoring to your friends and family?
Julia: I would and have recommended Frog Tutoring to many of my friends.

Frog Tutoring:How has your tutor helped you with your studying and learning skills?
Lanning: Matthew has really helped me to study for the vocabulary for my human geography class. He gives me examples and has me match it with the terms. He's also helped me study for the same class which is a hard class.

FT: What was your study method before meeting your tutor, and what is it like now?
Lanning: I really didn't have a method for studying. I just glanced through the book. Matthew is helping me learn how to study.

FT: What would you say are the best things your tutor does to help you learn?
Lanning: Matthew can help me with all my subjects. He's helped more with geometry ad human geography, but he's also helped with English and biology. He helps me focus and take more time doing my work.

FT: How has your tutor influenced your motivation to do your homework?
Lanning: Sometimes it just helps to have him sit while I do my assignments so that if I have questions he can help me with that.
