About Culinary Institute of America
The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), founded in 1946 by Frances Roth and Katharine Angell, stands as an esteemed entity in the world of culinary education. Located in Hyde Park, New York, on the east bank of the Hudson River, the institute isn't far from notable locations such as the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. Known for its rigorous academic programs and specialized culinary tracks, the CIA has expanded over time to include additional campuses in California, Texas, and Singapore, offering a global perspective to culinary education. Academically, the institution is recognized for its bachelor's and associate degrees in culinary arts and baking and pastry arts, which combine hands-on kitchen instruction with business and liberal arts courses.
The CIA's faculty is a distinguished group of industry professionals and certified master chefs who bring real-world experience into their classrooms and kitchens. Not only are the instructors accomplished chefs, but many are also authors of celebrated cookbooks and recipients of prestigious awards like the James Beard Award. Students at the CIA benefit from this wealth of experience, gaining insights and mentorship from tutors highly respected in their respective culinary fields. Alongside the faculty, CIA hosts numerous food-related conferences and forums, thereby creating a vibrant ecosystem of culinary thought leadership that extends well beyond the campus through symposiums and partnerships with industry leaders.
With over 3,000 students, the CIA boasts a robust campus life, complete with a fittingly culinary-themed mascot, the Egg—an homage to the versatility and fundamental nature of this ingredient in cooking. CIA's influence is felt worldwide, with a network of over 50,000 alumni that includes industry leaders such as Anthony Bourdain, Grant Achatz, and Christina Tosi. These prominent figures have paved the way for graduates in a myriad of gastronomical, business, and media roles. On-campus, students have access to multiple award-winning public restaurants that double as educational facilities, and they may choose to further specialize at one of the CIA's prominent centers such as the Colavita Center for Italian Food and Wine or The Rudd Center for Professional Wine Studies, affirming the institute's commitment to a comprehensive culinary education.
