Fun Facts

If I find the right person, I can talk about movies for hours! I don't have a favorite movie, but I do have a top ten list of Cohen Brothers movies. I have two young ones and a lovely wife who I love to take on car trips, hiking, and our living room because we can't really go anywhere else right now. I have been lucky enough to visit a lot of the western United States as well as Mexico, Canada, the UK, Jamaica, and Israel! Exploring ancient ruins of a medieval castle was a highlight of Israel.

About Me

In my most recent education position, I was a math teacher for Woodland Park High School in Woodland Park High School. Due to the school's decisions regarding the current pandemic, I decided to leave that job and am currently in the process of moving to Portland, Oregon. I graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a B.S. in Structural Engineering in 2014. I am currently seeking a part-time job while I take care of my two children and my wife works full time!

Experience

The academic school year 2019-2020 was my first year of teaching. I taught at Woodland Park High School, and I would say the year was productive, educational, and successful. I taught six periods of Integrated Math II (two honors), which consisted of a mix of Alegebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. This was all in a classroom environment and in-person until Covid-19 struck and we finished the year online via Google meetups. Before teaching, I was a tutor for Mathway, an online tutoring service.

Approach

As a teacher and tutor, I have always believed in the importance of healthy struggle. I feel as though there are two major mental roadblocks students have: a lack of agency and perseverance. With agency, a student will work towards learning by themselves. With perseverance, a student will try again when what they are working on fails. I use inquiry to push students towards discovering truths on their own, while ensuring that they do the work themselves so they barely notice learning happening.
