Fun Facts
I love the outdoors. I am a sports fan, particularly NBA, soccer/fĂștbol and baseball. I also enjoy science fiction, playing board games (currently improving my chess game!) with friends and family, and am always trying to expand my horizons by learning new things.
I grew up in northern California and have lived up and down the west coast, being in Portland now 4 years or so. Fall might be my favorite season here, but frankly I love all the seasons of the Pacific Northwest.
About Me
After earning a PhD in economics, I taught as a professor at a range of institutions, from large universities, to small private liberal arts colleges, to community college. I meet folks where they are, help bolster confidence through practice and put things into context. Academic success is largely about knowing what is being asked of you, and this is what I can help explain having been a teacher and worked individually with students in one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions for so long.
Experience
I have taught and tutored math, stats and economics courses from high school to PhD levels. My tutoring experience encompasses over 15 years of one-on-one and small group sessions for high school math, for college courses in economics, and for graduate-level courses in math and statistics.
Approach
To me, tutoring is by far the most effective way to learn. More than half of the battle is gaining confidence and understanding how to read questions and what is being asked of you and this happens so much more organically in a dynamic, interactive learning environment.
My approach is both holistic and personalized -- tailored to meet the challenges facing the student. For mathematical content, for example, the aversion to math is itself as much of an obstacle as the struggle with the material
