Fun Facts

My passions are art, writing, history (especially World War II), reading, and Christmas! I love to travel and watch movies with my Naval officer husband and our two cats, Cricket and Elliott.

About Me

I am a graduate of the College of William and Mary class of 2013. I graduated in three years with the honors of magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa and a seal from the National Institute of American History & Democracy. Since then, I have worked with children and done freelance travel planning.

Experience

I began tutoring students in middle school through my membership in the National Junior Honor society. I continued that tradition through high school and college, and my work as a nanny in the years following has given me eight more years of tutoring children, ages 3 to 13, in all school subjects. I specialize in the humanities.

Approach

I am a long-time tutor who loves seeing the "light bulb" go off when I am able to get students to understand material that they have been struggling with. I excel at figuring out how to tailor my approach to each child; what works for one student may not work exactly for another. From mnemonic devices to timelines and charts, there is a different method out there for everyone. My memories of being in school are crystal clear, and I use that vivid recall to put myself in the shoes of students.

AP English Tutoring

I took AP and honors English classes every year of high school (earning 5's on English AP tests). I earned the Governor's School AP Literature award my senior year of high school and have tutored peers and younger grades in English for many years. It is a subject that I love and that comes easily to me so I am able to tutor it with a very intuitive approach.

AP History Tutoring

I took AP history classes throughout my high school career. Government, European history, world history, U.S. history, and human geography are all AP history subjects that I earned As in. I have tutored history for a long time and have lots of study tips and tricks.

English Tutoring

English has always been a very interesting subject to me and is a subject that comes very naturally. I have received awards in English many times during my public school career, and have tutored it since middle school. I tutored it to elementary and middle school aged children for many years as a nanny and enjoy it greatly.

Reading Tutoring

Reading is an incredibly important discipline that is very difficult for some students to learn. It is a subject that always come easily to me, and I was known to peers and family as someone who read at all times. As a nanny, I worked with multiple children to improve their reading and reading comprehension skills, and taught preschool age children to read.

Homework Coach Tutoring

I have been a homework mentor for students since I was in middle school, and gained particular experience during my years as a nanny. Juggling four children meant that I had to impart upon all of them the skills and support they needed to organize and tackle their own work. Homework is a vital part of a student's course load, and knowing how to help then excel at home is something I specialize in.

Elementary Math Tutoring

I was excellent at math in elementary school, and my memory of that makes me a proficient tutor for elementary-aged math students. Math at that age can seem very daunting, but taught correctly, it can be fun. Years of tutoring elementary subjects in math have taught me that there is way to teach children the concepts in an enlightening and interesting way.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Elementary reading comprehension can be one of the most difficult subjects for students to tackle. It takes great patience and an envoy of teaching strategies, but I have seen it done. I have tutored younger students in reading comprehension since I was in elementary school myself, and I have done so ever since, especially in my work with the young students I nannied for. There is a particular joy in watching a child go from barely piecing letters together, to being able to understand and discuss what they are reading about.

Social Studies Tutoring

Excelling at social studies in elementary school is how my interest in history first sparked. That interest would become my college minor and a lifelong passion. I find social studies to be a fascinating subject that can easily be taught in a fun and engaging way. Years of tutoring children in various levels of social studies have equipped me with a tool belt of tricks, from visual to mnemonic devices and beyond.

Religion Tutoring

I worked as a religion teacher in high school and have studies various religions. Religion permeates all of my best subjects (history, art, writing, and English), so it has been a staple of my learning career. Learning about different religions has enriched my aptitude and understanding of many other subjects, as well as my own worldview.

Writing Tutoring

Writing is one of my passions, and has been since I was nine years old. I earned awards for creative writing and poetry in elementary, middle, and high school. Essay writing for any subject has been a strength of mine that I have used to maintain high GPAs across the board. I have taken creative writing courses as well. I have tutored in this subject for almost two decades for both younger students and peers; I have a knack for editing, flair, structure, and flow. I was a writer and editor for a school paper and a nanny for eight years where I specialized in tutoring and editing writing for ages 5-13.

Arts Tutoring

As an art and art history major and a lifelong artist and art history lover, this subject is one of my best. I have clocked countless hours in the studio and maintained an almost perfect GPA in my major. Studying art in all forms is something I excel in at school but also in a personal capacity. I have learned so much not just about art, but from it.

History Tutoring

I minored in history and graduated with the seal from the National Institute of American History & Democracy. In high school, I took numerous AP history classes and got A's in them all. I interned in Colonial Williamsburg as a living interpreter for a semester. I have participated in archaeological digs and made pilgrimages to countless museums. I am fascinated by history and have tutored various grades for the past 10 years.

Study Skills Tutoring

As someone who has always taken school incredibly seriously, I have amassed a large collection of study skills. I maintained A averages at every level of school, from elementary to college, and honing my study skills played a vital role for that. Almost two decades of tutoring various subjects and eight years of nanny experience with children ages 2-13 have allowed me to gain insight into many different skills appropriate for all subjects and ages.
