Fun Facts

I love playing tennis, social dancing, leisure reading, volunteering, and meeting new people. I have an open heart and mind when it comes to trying new things.

About Me

I am a junior at Texas Christian University studying English and education. My career goal is to become a high school English teacher because I have a passion for promoting literacy and independent thinking among the youth.

Experience

I studied hard throughout middle and high school, earning straight A's and academic honors. I attribute my success to my own trial and error and to the dedicated teachers and tutors who worked tirelessly to help me understand.

Since my freshman year at TCU, I have been assisting students with study skills, English, middle/high school math, and elementary reading. My sophomore year I began volunteering at Fort Worth's Fortress, a non-profit after-school academic program.

Approach

I was blessed with great teachers throughout my early years of schooling; I did not receive tutoring in elementary/middle school besides for standardized testing. Throughout middle school, I developed strong, effective study skills by trial and error. As a tutor, I want to help my students grow in their academic confidence so that they can study independently. I struggled immensely with high school math, but I fortunately found a great math tutor, Ms. Marilyn. I am forever indebted to her.

Elementary Math Tutoring

I would love to help elementary school students master fundamental mathematical concepts so they can excel in more advanced math classes upon entering middle school.

Homework Coach Tutoring

I participated in a study skills class over the summer in both middle and high school. In these classes, I learned how to best manage my study time, such as sometimes completing easier tasks to boost confidence or starting with the more difficult when feeling tired. In addition, I learned how to improve my focus while studying by taking breaks of an appropriate length of time. Finally, the class taught me the three types of learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Although the more senses activated while studying leads to higher rates of remembrance, every student leans slightly more to one style. When I discovered I was an auditory learner, I studied much more efficiently.

History Tutoring

Freshman year of high school: subject–World History; grade–A
Sophomore year: subject–AP World History; grade–A (AP exam: 3)
Junior year: subject–APUSH; grade–A (AP exam: 4)
Senior year: subject–AP Gov't; grade–A (AP exam: 3)
Freshman year of college: fall semester–World History to 1500 (A-); spring semester–World History since 1500

Social Studies Tutoring

Having taken Geography, World History, U.S. History, and American Government in both high school and college, I can impart my knowledge of social studies at its most basic level to prepare elementary school students for middle school history course work.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I am an English major at TCU, and I have taken honors and AP English classes throughout high school. Since I read a myriad of academic books as well as popular novels during my free time, I have developed a reading skill set that allows me to understand and analyze the text more efficiently.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

I received a 660 on the reading and writing section of the SAT. Since success on the SAT is based on becoming extremely comfortable with the format of the test and using the format to one's advantage, I would highly recommend Khan Academy's test prep resources over general reading comprehension tutoring to yield the best test results.

Writing Tutoring

As I am an English major at TCU and am more drawn to the humanities than the sciences, all of my college courses format their exams as essays. Thus, the writing skills I have learned in my freshman college courses, such as World History, Geography, Introduction to Fiction, and Critical Investigation: Teaching and Learning, have greatly improved and solidified. Besides college, I received a 5 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam and a 4 on the Literature and Composition. I took a Creative Writing class my senior year of high school, and I plan on taking a college-level class of the same subject in the future. My freshman and sophomore years I was enrolled in a Distinguished Scholars Program, an extremely selective class that focuses on research methods and the writing of research papers. My freshman year I investigated the effects of nature on people's health, and my sophomore year I researched the issue of surveillance.

Writing Advance Tutoring

I can prepare students for college-level writing as well as AP exams, which typically all have a free-response portion.

Geography Tutoring

During my freshman fall semester at TCU, I took World Regional Geography and received an A-. From this class, I acquired a general understanding of human processes and ways of life across the globe and how the physical environment plays a significant role in shaping human societies.

Reading Tutoring

I am an English major at TCU; thus, I do a lot of reading. I would love to work with students of any grade level to read more efficiently and connect more readily to poetry and prose.

Pre Algebra Tutoring

I entered high school having already taken Pre-Algebra in middle school, so I had and still retain my solid understanding of the concepts that lie at the heart of algebra.

ISEE Tutoring

Similar to the SAT, the ISEE requires more emphasis on becoming familiar with the standardized test's format, but I would love to review any of the test's recurring concepts with which a student struggles.

Algebra Tutoring

I receive an A in both Algebra I and II, and although I am an English major, I still remember how to solve equations :)

Algebra II Tutoring

I took honors Algebra II, and I struggled immensely until I began tutoring with a teacher at a different school near my house. I ended with an A and a deeper, much more solid understanding of the material than I could have attained if I had either dropped to an on-level class or tried to learn from a teacher who I just could not understand.

AP English Tutoring

Language and Comp: 5 on exam
Literature and Comp: 4

AP History Tutoring

World History: 3
U.S. History: 4
