Fun Facts

I lived in a ghost town for two years, love to garden - indoors, and out, and try to take a trip around Nevad and Utah during the summer with one of my 5.5 grandchildren.

About Me

I am a licensed education/utah/sandy">special education teacher, love to teach reading and math. As a tutor I impact my students with each session. For example, I’ve have been working with three separate students going into first and third grades. The first grader was struggling with phonetics and reading. After four months, she was reading basic phonics books and can spell CVC words without prompts. The students going into third grade did not know how to read at all. The boy has autism and continued to struggle with matching letter names with their sounds and in determining which letter to use when spelling words. With the help of an alphabet chart, he can write simple CVC words, but still needs a lot of support. His sister is reading basic phonics booklets and was approaching fluency after five months of sessions.

Experience

I began working with children when my daughter was two months old. I ran my own chidcare business for ten years. I then began working as a paraprofessional for Humboldt County School District, NV for seven years; I worked three years as a resource teacher for Athlos Academy; UT; and two years as an early childhood education/utah/sandy">special education teacher for Nye County School District, NV; in addition to substitute teaching for Washoe County school District, NV, and Canyons School District.

Approach

I prefer to offer students a hands-on approach to learning.
Manipulatives are especially helpful in working eith math concepts.
I have included my mission statement below:

Mission Statement

I believe that all students, regardless of ability and disability can learn. If given clear, high expectations, students can obtain and exceed these expectations. Students who believe in themselves and are nurtured in their ability to discover, engage, trust each other and the teacher, are more willing to take risks, and grow in all aspects of their educations. Hands on project-based learning promotes the ability of the student to focus on their strengths and learn from their peers when collaborating on assignments especially if the project is relevant to their community or school.
