About Me
Hi, my name is Derrick Davis - a central-florida">University of Central Florida Alumnus, New York University Speech Language Pathology graduate student and current Kindergarten/1st grade teacher. I have always loved to provide intervention/enrichment in the core elementary areas of reading and mathematics. I have worked with children my entire life from after-school programs, school speech and language therapist, tutoring and teacher. I have provided 1:1 services, small group instruction (1:6) and even whole group instruction. I hold certifications in Elementary Education (K-6) and Exceptional Student Education (ESE) K-12.
Experience
I have been tutoring privately for 5 years in after-schools settings and 1:1 instruction. I am currently a dual certification 1st grade teacher at UCP of Central Florida where I have been teaching for the past 4 years. Most of my expertise is in explicit phonics instruction. comprehension, and math interventions and enrichment.
Approach
Effective tutoring requires that the tutor take time to build meaningful relationships with their students to learn their strengths and weaknesses. It takes realization that every student learns differently and playing on their strengths will lead to success. It takes patience, good listening skills, honesty and empathy.
