Fun Facts

I've dressed up as a dinosaur for the past 4 Halloweens in a row.
I make a fantastic quiche and an even better grilled cheese.
I love to play tennis, but I also do a lot of rock climbing and bocce on the weekends.
In addition to my philosophy writing, I also write fiction and poetry. I even help my friends with writing their own poetry and song lyrics.

About Me

I've always loved learning, so I've wanted to teach ever since I was little. In college, I started out as a neuroscience major at Ursinus College, but shifted to philosophy at The Evergreen State College, where I wrote my thesis on Simondon's theories of ontogenesis and technology. Tutoring has become my full time job while I prepare for grad school in Philosophy. I've been very grateful for the opportunity to work on my teaching skills before one day becoming a professor.

Experience

I've been seriously tutoring for 2.5 years now, from teaching grammar to 3rd graders to revising graduate dissertations. While in college, I was hired as a go-between to help professors and students make classrooms happier and more effective. This gave me a deep insight into why teachers do the things they do, even when it doesn't seem to make sense. In the past couple years, I've also been running free philosophy and literature discussion groups in my city, for experts and newcomers alike.

Approach

I've worked with accelerated students, struggling students, students with learning disabilities, and more! I know there are tons of ways that people learn, so I always customize my tutoring to each student. I start by figuring out what is stopping them up AND what is working for them. By clearing up confusions, laying down more good knowledge, and learning new tools, my students can confidently move on to more advanced concepts, each using their own unique style.

Philosophy Tutoring

My focuses as a philosophy major were in philosophy of technology and existentialism. I worked heavily with Nietzsche, Simondon, Hui, and others. Every week, I tutor students in all sorts of areas, from the Pre-Socratics to 21st century thinkers. I have even taught some customized courses on philosophy of science, metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of technology. I can help both with learning the content and with making sure that the essay is written the way philosophy essays are supposed to be written.

Writing Tutoring

In college, I focused on writing using 4 styles: academic papers, fiction, science research papers, and pop-style explainers (like in blogs or magazines). I wrote long papers (20+ pages), medium papers (5+ pages), and more short papers (<5 pages) than I can count. A lot of good writing comes down to being comfortable with a handful of rules about good structure. I can help with things from structuring arguments to reorganizing paragraphs to cleaning up spelling and grammar. No matter what kind of writing you are working on, I can help you with it as well as the the rules and skills to keep improving.
