Fun Facts

This summer I volunteered in Africa for three weeks! It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, as cliché as that sounds. It was eye-opening, and truly life changing. I went on a two-day safari and took a selfie with a lion, almost got my head bit off (totally worth it)! I love to play the piano and to paint, and I wish I could dance! But I'm terribly uncoordinated.

About Me

I am a junior Biology major at Ohio State University. I also have a minor in studio art. I am currently studying for the MCAT, with hopes to go to medical school once I graduate. I have a GPA of 3.606, and I hope to become a surgeon one day.

When I was in Africa, I taught English at the local school (K-12). I taught 3rd grade, 6th grade, and 12th grade. This really helped me learn a teaching method, because in Africa, all of the students were at different levels with the material they were studying. Also, the students only spoke Swahili-with very limited English, so I had to present the material in a way that students would understand what I was saying. I also learned Swahili so I could better converse with the students and teach them. When I wasn't at the school, I was at the columbus">tutoring center and I was further helping students individually. I also have tutored for organic chemistry. I love columbus">tutoring and helping people, and I think that Frog columbus">Tutoring would really help me learn better techniques and allow me to help more people.

Also branching on my Africa experience- it was very difficult to convey material to the students, especially since they were all at different levels, and had extremely limited english understanding. Rather than stressing them out or making them feel as if they couldn't do it, I worked with them one-on-one and very slowly so that they would understand the material before moving on. If they didn't understand it, I put it in terms so that they could. I believe that rather than undermining someone, it is important to reassure them that they can do it, and work with them slowly until they understand it. Patience and dedication will go a long way when helping people.
