Fun Facts

I have a passion for and am routinely involved in theater and film. I love all stages of the creative process, from concept to writing, to shooting, to acting. I am always singing and dancing, and I am in love with musical theater, with some of my favorite musicals including Rent, Chicago, Les Miserables, and In the Heights.

About Me

I recently graduated from Georgia State University in May 2022 with a bachelor's in Journalism. In addition to concentrating my studies on Media and Society, my minor studies were in Political Science. I have always been interested in the intersection between communications, media, and advocacy.

Experience

In high school (2013) I tutored a French exchange student in biology. In college, I tutored several peers in English writing and MCat CARS test prep. In 2016, 2 families hired me to tutor their kids (12 and 14) in reading, writing, and algebra; I worked with both clients for 2 years. I became TESOL certified in 2018, going on to teach English remotely to native Chinese speakers aged 4-13, which I still do. I find it rewarding to help others improve their understanding and communication.

Approach

In grade school, I was very particular and detail oriented. Despite earning high grades, I sometimes needed extra time to complete assignments to my liking, and I struggled to maintain focus during class at times. I remember teachers who took time to understand my learning style and accommodate me, as in allowing me to stay in the classroom over breaks to complete my work, instead of becoming frustrated with or penalizing me. As such, patience and customization are integral to my teaching style.

I work with groups of 1 to 4, wherein we see and interact with each other and I use skills such as TPR (total physical response, i.e. exaggerated body language/cues), props, games, songs, rewards and repetition to teach foreign concepts to non-native Chinese speakers, entirely in English.
