Fun Facts
A couple of fun facts about me are that I am a dog mom and I used to practice Muay Thai! Even though I don't practice Muay Thai anymore, I like to stay active by taking my dog for adventurous sniff walks in different areas of Kern County.
About Me
First and foremost, I am a first-generation college student of Mexican descent. Growing up, I didn't see very many teachers/professors who looked like me so I aspire to be an encouragement to other students of color who are the first in their families to undertake the challenge of a bachelor's and/or master's degree. I'm also currently a tutor at my university's writing center and a graduate student in the MA in English program at the California State University of Bakersfield. Although I've completed all my coursework, completion of my master's degree is pending the completion of my thesis (ETA Spring/Summer 2023). I hope to one day become a professor of English Composition and Literature so that I can encourage students to use their education to break down the barriers to opportunity.
Experience
As a teaching associate in the graduate program, I've had the opportunity to teach two levels of Writing and Research courses at my university and as a writing center tutor, I have extensive experience tutoring students with writing assignments in English, Art, Nursing, Biology, Finance, History, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Communications, Religious Studies, Philosophy, & more. Lastly, I have extensive experience navigating MLA and APA citation styles, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, & Pages.
Approach
Though I've always been a lover of books, grammar and writing in an academic setting were a challenge in my adolescence and undergraduate education because I was a first-generation, Hispanic college student with no reference on how to navigate academic language and expectations as a student writer. This experience motivated me to be a role model who strives to make reading and writing inclusive and accessible to students of all backgrounds.
