About Me
I hold a Doctor of Psychology degree in Organizational Management and Consulting from Phillips Graduate University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from California State University Long Beach, and have completed post-graduate coursework in Education, Language, and Literacy in the Master of Arts program at the University of California School of Education. I completed my doctoral portfolio entitled A Theory of a Hierarchy of Needs for Organizations, wrote a chapter on the future of business in a book entitled People Practics: 17 Practical Tactics for Business and Non-Profit Success, and wrote several papers on employee engagement, workplace incivility, and the future of work.
As a child, I struggled with math. In fifth grade, I was fortunate to have a neighbor who was a school teacher and offered to tutor me. Because of her patience and guidance, I became a math wiz in grade school and was doing eighth-grade math in my sixth-grade year. Her tutoring in my elementary years served me well, all the way through high school calculus.
When I entered my first year of college, I struggled with expository writing. I spent my first two years of college submitting substandard papers. I ultimately taught first-year college students how to read and write for college success.
After homeschooling my children, raising a family, and working as an organizational management consultant, I completed my doctorate in organizational psychology. I took a keen interest in change management, strategic planning, and leadership development. While these have proven excellent areas of expertise for me in helping organizations improve how they work, they have also proven to be excellent approaches to helping individuals improve how they work as well.
Experience
I am an experienced community college instructor of reading comprehension and expository writing. I am formally trained in virtual classroom instruction and management, thinking maps, and graphic organizers. I have experience homeschooling my two children up to middle school subjects. I am experienced in developing lesson plans, schedules, exams, and rubrics for measuring learning success.
Approach
My approach to learning is to first assess where the learner is in their learning on a particular subject. I have found it helpful to guide the learner into acknowledging what they already know. This helps the learner gain confidence in learning something new. I also assess how the learner learns best, where the learner excels, and where the learner struggles. I use the VARK (visual, auditory, reading, and kinesthetic) model to ensure that the student is provided with more than one approach to l
