About Me

I am a graduate of portland-state-university">Portland State University (Portland Oregon) with a B.S. Degree and a 3.56 GPA and I am currently working towards my Masters in Education at PSU. After graduation from my undergraduate program I went abroad for a year and a half to teach English and science abroad in various countries. I recently returned to the US to start working on my masters so I can teach what I am really passionate about! My goals include becoming a certified high school chemistry teacher and an outdoor education instructor. I have over 5+ years of 1-on-1 portland">tutoring experience and have been working as a full-time educator for over 2 years.

I have been portland">tutoring and mentoring students since high school, where I helped my classmates and peers with their coursework and studies. During my time at university I found myself constantly helping classmates with their work - everything from editing papers to studying for exams, and I realized that I really enjoyed this kind of engagement and service, so when opportunities arose I began portland">tutoring in subjects like math and science and I quickly began to offer help to students of all ages. My focus in school had been pre-medicine/neuroscience but during my 4th year, I found myself in an education position doing science outreach in the Portland area and realized my true passion was education.

My approach as a portland">tutor is one that I have gained from my experiences as a student as well as from my experiences in front of the classroom. I know that everyone has a different learning style and so my approach varies depending on the student’s needs, however my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples whenever possible. I try to answer the "why" questions in classes like math and science. I don't simply ask students to memorize things, instead I teach to the foundations of the subject and encourage students to work problems out, thinking and making new connections for themselves.
