Fun Facts
I've been told by family and friends that when I was little, I would say "Let's not play, let's talk."
I have always enjoyed communicating and learning about people. ASL gives me the opportunity to show individuals another way of communicating. I enjoy discovering each person's strengths to tailor the curriculum in a way that they would best learn the language. In the past when I was learning ASL, I would often tell my deaf friends that I thought sign language was my mother tongue. Not, because
About Me
I'm a Mom of twin toddlers girls. So, I've been using ASL to teach them to express themselves.
I began my journey with ASL through my Christian organization (Jehovah's Witnesses).
As Christian witnesses, we are taught constantly to respect, love, and think of others as superior. For example, we view the deaf as a people with a culture and language and not as someone who is disabled. In fact, we acknowledge 101 different sign languages worldwide on our website JW.ORG.
I also attended an ASL congregation for almost 6 1/2 years. Strictly using ASL for all communications.
We also provide bible lessons on various bible subjects in over 1000+ other languages. Doing so requires translation departments and language classes.
So, I've been in school other than elementary & high school, through our organization. This education is known to be taught on a college level. Through this course, I've been learning how to be an effective teacher, loving counselor, and skilled public speaker for more than 36 years. This is an ongoing training.
I've acquired the skill of ASL from my Christian organization, in which I use secular to support my family & ministry.
I've also worked with various skilled interpreters and the deaf for over 7 years before venturing out on my own to instruct and interpret for others
Additionally, for the last 8 years, I've also learned French. But, I must say it isn't an easy language for me. I prefer ASL over French.
I am originally from Chicago. Grew up a bit in Arizona and then back to Chicago Illinois where my 5 siblings and I grew up in the neighborhood of the chicago">University of Chicago. I've moved several times to help different communities from WI to NY and ended up in TX before landing here in TN.

Approach
An example of how I like to approach the student is to help him or her be an effective signer. I have them act out words, act out stories without mouthing, voicing, or signing words. They also learn by using memorization methods with a balloon, scarf, or other games. Also interacting with the deaf, mind mapping, watching movies with deaf actors to train their eyes or understand culture, etc. Conduct evaluations after covering sections. These evaluations include sentence structure, questions about what articles

American Sign Language Tutoring
Instructing or tutoring children in 1st - 9th grade has been a joy for me since 2010. Helping them think outside the box which helps them in other subject in school and just in life. It pulls kids out of their comfort zone and makes them think creatively. I enjoy also showing them how learning ASL can become a future investment.
