Fun Facts
One funny thing about me is that since my name is Elizabeth and I love everything warm and cozy, my friends nicknamed me “Lizzie the Lizard”. I love the sunshine, and running in hot weather, and I am always layering extensively to avoid being cold! I’m convinced I was a cold-blooded reptile in a past life because I thrive in warm climates!
About Me
I am a recent graduate of Emory University with a passion for helping others improve their language, reading, and writing skills. My attention to detail and organization led me to become a Mandarin major in college. My passion for using words and texts to connect with others only strengthened during these undergraduate years. Also, it deepened my love for the English language as I began to analyze and compare the two languages. Throughout my academic career, I have had a knack for helping my peers edit their essays and improve their writing and reading abilities. My thoroughness always helped my colleagues to reach a deeper level of insight and improve their marks on assignments. Furthermore, my experience in retail and my outgoing, friendly personality make me well-equipped to help students achieve their academic goals.
Experience
As a top-performing student in High School and Undergraduate, I became a sought-after resource for my peers. I became “the teacher”, the one explaining what writing an essay truly meant. As part of what I called “workshopping”, I would edit my peers’ works online and provide extensive feedback. The satisfaction of seeing my friends’ “lightbulb moments” sparked so much joy, but also helped me grow as a critical thinker. I learned that not only did I enjoy this work, but I was quite good at it.
Approach
When I was in ninth-grade English class, I struggled with analytical essays. The task of “proving my argument” intimidated me--the idea of convincing the reader of my beliefs and supporting them with the text left me puzzled. Slowly, I started to deconstruct the anatomy of an argument. I thought of my other subjects and how easily they came to me. What if, I told myself, I found a way to reframe my essays in a way more similar to, say, a math proof? Using this new and improved mindset, English

Chinese
Chinese Tutoring
All throughout college, I took Chinese classes. These ranged in Mandarin language classes where I took classes on how to speak, read, and write, but also content courses. In my content courses, I gained a fuller perspective on China and putting the country in a global context.
English Tutoring
In college, I took English classes frequently because of my love for reading and writing. Some of my favorite classes were focused on Poetry and Global Literature in English. Taking these classes helped keep my skills sharp and develop as an English student.
Literature Tutoring
Literature was another subject I enjoyed taking in college. Taking these courses helped me analyze texts and break down literary devices, but I also found these classes helped me become a stronger writer, which helped me in my other subjects as well. My favorite class was called Special Topics in Literature: Sex, Drugs, and Rock N' Roll.
Religion Tutoring
I find religion fascinating, so my undergraduate career helped me dive deeper into this interest. Over the course of my studies, I took the following courses: Judaism and Islam, East Asian Religions, Modern Catholicism, and Special Topics in Religion: American Beliefs in the 1970s.
Spanish I Tutoring
Taking Spanish during college helped me maintain the skills I had built and worked hard to achieve in High School. I learned more about how to express my thoughts in Spanish, read famous works like Don Quixote, and conducted research and presentations in Spanish.
Spanish II Tutoring
Spanish II was a course I took while spending the summer in Spain. By taking this course, I further deepened my speaking, reading and writing skills. I also loved how in this class we watched famous Spanish movies, listened to Spanish Pop songs, and gained a deeper understanding of what life in Spain was like.
