Fun Facts
I started speaking at nine months and evolved into an effective communicator—turning an early love for language into a lifelong strength in teaching and research.
About Me
Hi! My name is Laura Amato, and I am deeply passionate about education, problem-solving, and fostering student growth. I am beginning my PhD in Systems Engineering at Mississippi State University and hold an M.S. from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in Engineering with a minor in Scientific and Technical Communication from Arizona State University.
With three years of tutoring experience, I specialize in creating personalized, engaging learning experiences for students of all ages and backgrounds. My teaching philosophy is rooted in critical thinking, adaptability, and student empowerment. I prioritize interactive, hands-on learning by using tools like IXL, Scholastic Study Jams, CK-12, and Education.com, adjusting my approach to meet each student’s unique needs.
I have extensive experience working with students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities, tailoring my methods to ensure learning is accessible, engaging, and confidence-building. Whether it’s using games for younger learners, real-world applications for high schoolers, or integrating financial literacy into math lessons, I strive to make every session meaningful and motivating.
I believe in meeting students where they are and creating a supportive, structured environment that helps them reach their full potential. I aim to help students gain confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and achieve academic success—all while making learning fun and accessible!
Experience
I have worked extensively with K-12 and college students across multiple subjects, including math, science, reading, writing, financial literacy, and STEM/STEAM education. My experience spans one-on-one private tutoring, online instruction, and classroom-based facilitation in in-person and virtual settings.
I serve as a Private Tutor and Academic Coach at Jones-Gordon School, specializing in personalized instruction for students with dyslexia and learning disabilities.
Approach
My tutoring approach is personalized, structured, and student-centred, designed to build confidence, critical thinking skills, and long-term academic success. I believe that every student learns differently, so I tailor each session to their strengths, challenges, and interests.
