Fun Facts
The town that I grew up in has our state school for the deaf. I was immersed in Deaf culture and grew up around signers. During high school, I took ASL as it was offered due to the high volume of deaf people in my town. The exposure that I have received from my community has inspired me to look into learning other languages.
About Me
I will be a senior at my university this fall, and next spring I will graduate with my bachelor's in ASL Interpreting. At the time of my graduation, I will be a fully licensed interpreter, and I will have the option to pursue a teaching license due to the nature of my degree.
Experience
As a member of Phi Theta Kappa, I have been given many opportunities to engage with my community. For the past two years, I have done a combination of paid and unpaid tutoring. I have also worked as an assistant teacher and program assistant with an after-school program.
Approach
When I was a child, I found that many teachers were unwilling to teach with the different styles of their learners in mind. It caused me to have to reteach myself lessons to succeed. I feel that it is important to provide children with multiple strategies in order to give them the best chance at learning.
