Fun Facts

I love to travel and play guitar. During my senior year of high school, I was lucky enough to take an English course on the Beats Generation in which we read Beatnik literature and eventually ventured upon a 15-day Kerouac inspired road trip from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to San Francisco and back. One night in the middle of flat open Texas, we got out of the van to appreciate the night sky. I played "Melissa" by The Allman Brothers while we were out there under the stars. It was perfect.

About Me

I am a rising senior English and Philosophy major at boston-college">Boston College. I've been on the Dean's List since my first semester of sophomore year. After college, I hope to teach English in a Spanish speaking country with the help of a Fulbright Scholarship. Eventually, I plan to attend graduate school and study for a Masters in English.

Experience

In Boston, I am involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters. For the past 2 years, I have taken the T to my buddy's elementary school in order to enjoy lunch and recess with him. The whole experience has been a wonderful opportunity to serve as a mentor, role model, and friend for my buddy.

During my semester abroad in Bilbao, Spain, I helped a basque adult with his English in a weekly one-on-one class. It was fun to share some American culture with him while also learning about Basque traditions.

Approach

From personal experience, I have noticed that it is much easier to succeed in class when I find something interesting about the academic material. Therefore, I hope to help my students learn how to enjoy their school work so that they can not only improve their understanding of school subjects, but they can also appreciate the learning process.

English Tutoring

I love to read and I'm studying English and Philosophy at Boston College, so I feel prepared to help students who struggle with critical analysis, writing/organizing papers, and how to read carefully. Also, if you want to learn to enjoy your English classes, I could help with that too. In Highschool, I preferred my math/science classes, but I had a revelation that English is important to me. I would try my best to help you experience a similar excitement about English.

Literature Tutoring

In Highschool, I took American Lit., Post-Modern Lit., and a class on the Beats Generation. In College, I have taken Classics of Russian Lit., Studies in Poetry, Studies in Narrative, a class on Joyce's Ulysses, and a summer class in Venice in which we read Brodsky, Mann, and Proust. From my Philosophy major, I have also read a lot of critical theory and literary criticism. I would love to share my analytical techniques, reading practices, and writing strategies with any students who seek some extra help.

Philosophy Tutoring

I love Philosophy and hence, I'm working towards a BA in philosophy for next year. In college, I have enjoyed my many philosophy classes, such as a class on Political Philosophy in Chile, a class called "Perspectives" which was a massive 6 credit full year course that covered everything from Socrates and Plato up until Nietzsche and Freud. I took a class on Existentialism, as well as a class called "Philosophy of Imagination". I would love to help prospective students learn to read philosophy, and even learn to appreciate it as an essential academic subject.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

As an English and Philosophy major, I have learned to look for details while reading. While there are certainly a variety of exercises and learned techniques and tricks that can help students become more attentive readers, I think the best way to improve is through practice. In order to teach Reading Comprehension, I would share the methods of reflection and analysis that I have learned in my college courses, but I would also put students in contact with books that that they may find intriguing so that students can begin to read analytically and improve on their own.

Spanish II Tutoring

Having studied spanish all my life, I was able to finally achieve fluency after a month long summer course in Santiago, Chile, and a semester abroad in Bilbao, Spain. While in Bilbao, I continued studying Philosophy and English Literature, but I took my classes in Spanish so as to further develop grammar, writing, reading, and conversational skills. While in High School, there were moments when I thought Spanish was superfluous and unnecessary, but I am now glad that I continued to study Spanish because it has allowed me to travel and meet my best friends. I would hope to help students see the potential rewards of attaining Spanish proficiency.

While my major is Philosophy and English, I enjoy math and I have taken Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra in college. Also, I was once an Economics Major. From my economics classes, I have learned some of the practical applications of mathematics that function to predict how the global market works.
