Fun Facts

I am an AVID reader. Books- fiction, non-fiction, sci-fi, anything really- allow me to enter another world. I get attached to characters and feel very sad when I am entering the last quarter of the book. I also LOVE to travel. Again, it must be that I am fascinated by places, people, and things that aren't familiar ie: the idea of entering or being in what seems like another world!

About Me

I am a college graduate at portland-state-university">Portland State University. I studied Biology and will be doing a Post-bac in Psychology. My goals are to enter a PhD to become a professor and carry clinical research in Behavioral Neuroscience. I am very well versed in the hard sciences, social sciences, English, and History. I am very conscious person both academically and socially. I enjoy being around kids, as the oldest of eight I've always been around kids and find conversations with them fascinating.

Experience

In college I was a part of many STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematician). As an Ambassador I was able to portland">tutor other college students in college courses that I have already completed and was successful at. As an undergraduate biology researcher at PSU, I've worked alongside graduate students and carried virus research. This allowed me to learn ways to teach students. I was a mentor for various programs at PSU including International Students, LSAMP programs.

Approach

As a refugee, I grew up with my Dad who did not speak Enlish or ever any formal schooling. As a child, I learned to teach my self concepts and technical information. This has allowed me to become my own teacher and really find techniques that work to teach myself. I believe that as a portland">tutor, I should not assume what a student may or may not know. I find it very significant to go over ideas, concepts, etc. over and over again until the student is confident in the information.

Anatomy Physiology I Tutoring

Anatomy & Physiology was one of my favorite college courses! I have taken Anatomy & Physiology I, II, and III along with all the labs. I received an A in every class and lab. It is a great course for me to tutor because I dream of becoming a science Professor and this experience will further me in succeeding in doing that.

Literature Tutoring

I've taken many literature courses in college an received A in all. Literature is my favorite subject and I keep reading and comprehending literature even after college and will continue to do so as I explore life!

Sociology Tutoring

I like to say I am a sociologist by habit! Studying sociology is something I do during my spare time. I did take a couple of sociology classes in college, which I received A's in all. I believe sociology to be a subject in which every person, despite profession, should study. As such, I will tutor my students how the concepts introduced in sociology applies to them on a daily basis.

Study Skills Tutoring

I am an immigrant who came to the United States as refugee status due to civil war in my home country. This unfortunate event in my life has allowed me to learn to teach myself motivation, priorities, and the important of education. As such, I have learned to teach myself ways in which to manage my time. Studying is a time consuming effort and thus, it is always imperative to study smarter not harder! I want to tutor kids ways to study efficiently and successfully!

Algebra Tutoring

Algebra is one of those classes that many students seem to get bored with very easily. I think the trick is showing students how it can be beneficial to them in the future. For example, a student will wonder: why is finding a letter important? Why should I care? I would ask that student what they'd like to do as a career... if they reply engineering or scientist, I can easily show them why finding x is important. If they reply arts or literature? I would ask them: don't you wonder how engineers know how to turn a picture of a building into the real thing?

The trick is to make it relevant. Finding x can seem senseless... until you find it.... then it becomes a treasure! (Imagine the joy you experienced when you solved a problem!)

AP Chemistry Tutoring

Chemistry is like magic... one that amazes everyone but anyone can learn and understand!

Chemistry is magic! It is beautiful in many ways. It is applied physics really!

Chemistry was difficult for me at first but once I slowly understood it, I was appalled with wonder. It made me look at objects around me differently.

Middle School Math Tutoring

Math is one of those subjects that gives students a hard time. It is usually difficult for them because students tend to give up too quickly. The trick is to make math as a whole relevant to the student. SHOW them how they can use it by speaking on scientist, engineers, and mathematicians who've made a difference using math. If the student isn't interested in that, I think it's important to let them know that even a menial job as a clerk requires math at a register or that understanding math will save them embarrassment as an adult in case they ever catch themselves in a conversations that requires some quick mental math solving! The realities in which math comes into play is endless!

Social Studies Tutoring

Social Studies is a very important subject in my mind! I think understanding social structures, concepts, and issues is something every child should be taught in order to live in a productive society.
