Fun Facts

I am a board game fiend. When it comes to beverages, I can be a hot tea snob. I sing along terribly to music in my car. I've never been to New York City, and I'm dying to go. I have a dog named Atticus, and he is one of my favorite things to talk about.

About Me

I am a PhD candidate at Texas Christian University in the history department, and I am a part-time professor at Tarrant County College. I study gender and labor in Texas. I've become something of a professional student; I've made All As in both undergraduate and graduate school, graduating summa cum laude from austin-state-university">Stephen F. Austin State University. I hope to be a full-time history professor some day.

Experience

I have been a shreveport">tutor since 2007. I was a history/political science/psychology shreveport">tutor at Stephen F. Austin's award winning Academic Assistance and Research Center. In 2010, I became a shreveport">tutor for athletes at Texas Christian University, where I still work. I have been a college instructor since January 2014, and I've tutored people preparing for the AP US History exam, the SAT, GRE, and the GED. I am a certified Master shreveport">tutor through the College Reading and Learning Association.

Approach

I firmly believe that all students learn differently. I try to find the best method for the students I work with for both retaining information and learning how to apply what they've learned.
Learning is always easier when it's made fun. In both the classes I teach and my shreveport">tutoring sessions, I use methods like games and other techniques to help the students learn.

English Tutoring

In addition to taking numerous literature and English classes as an undergraduate at SFA, I have tutored athletes in literature since 2010. I have tutored multiple aspects of American, British, and world literature from multiple time periods. In history, we crossover a lot with our English counterparts, analyzing literature from the eras we study.
In every English class I've ever taken, from elementary through graduate school, I've made all As.

History Tutoring

I have taught history at the college level since January 2014. I have a BA, an MA, and am a PhD candidate in American History. Furthermore, I have tutored history since 2007. While my focus is American history, I have minor fields in European and world history.
I've made all As in every history course I've ever taken.

Literature Tutoring

In addition to taking numerous literature and English classes as an undergraduate at SFA, I have tutored athletes in literature since 2010. I have tutored multiple aspects of American, British, and world literature from multiple time periods. In history, we crossover a lot with our English counterparts, analyzing literature from the eras we study.
I've made all As in every literature class I've ever taken.

Political Science Tutoring

I have tutored political science since 2007. Political science and history are definitely intertwined; if I didn't have a solid grasp on political science, I could not be a good historian.
In the two political science classes I took as an undergraduate, I made all As.

Psychology Tutoring

I've been a psychology tutor since 2007. I minored in psychology at Stephen F. Austin State University. This meant that I took 18 hours in the field. I made all As in every course. I have continued to tutor psychology at TCU.

Study Skills Tutoring

This isn't necessarily a subject area, but I have worked with clients on study skills since 2007. Part of my training as a tutor through the College Reading and Learning Association strongly emphasized imparting study skills in tutoring sessions. Moreover, I have used study skills in my own life. I have made all As in every course I've ever taken since beginning high school and through a PhD program. I'm not brilliant; I'm just very good at studying.

Writing Tutoring

In most courses I have taken, I have had to use and develop writing skills. As I've said in the study skills section, I've made all As in every class I've taken. I'm convinced this is because I have, over time, developed strong writing skills. I have written a 110 page master's thesis, won writing awards in my department, presented my work at conferences, been published, and am currently working on a doctoral dissertation. I write for a living. As a tutor, I work to pass on the skills I've learned to my clients.

AP English Tutoring

Unfortunately, since my test was over five years ago and the official scores have been purged from the GRE's archives, you're just going to have to trust me on what I tell you about my scores. I made a 170 on the verbal portion and a 150 on the quantitative. I made a 4.1 on the writing. I have tutored students on the GRE who applied and were accepted in to their desired graduate programs.

AP History Tutoring

I have taught history at the college level since January 2014. I have a BA, an MA, and am a PhD candidate in American History. Furthermore, I have tutored history since 2007. While my focus is American history, I have minor fields in European and world history.
I've made all As in every history course I've ever taken.

Geography Tutoring

I have taken several geography classes in high school and undergraduate. I was a teaching assistant in 2010-2011 for a geography course at TCU. I've made All As in all geography courses, and I've tutored geography at both SFA and TCU.

Homework Coach Tutoring

This isn't necessarily a subject area, but I have worked with clients on study skills since 2007. Part of my training as a tutor through the College Reading and Learning Association strongly emphasized imparting study skills in tutoring sessions. Moreover, I have used study skills in my own life. I have made all As in every course I've ever taken since beginning high school and through a PhD program. I'm not brilliant; I'm just very good at studying.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

While it has been a long time since I took the SATs, I made a very strong score on the Verbal and Writing portions. I have tutored students for the SATs, and they've been very satisfied with their scores.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I've been a voracious reader since my Mom put Berenstein Bears in my hands. I love to read, and I hope to pass that love on to my clients by putting books in their hands that they will enjoy. Furthermore, I have discovered tips and tricks to help students of multiple ages retain and understand what they've read through my time as a tutor and as a reading teacher with the Institute of Reading Development.

GRE Tutoring

While it has been over five years since I've taken the GREs, I made a strong score. Unfortunately, I can't post the official scores, because the GREs purge scores after five years. I have, however, tutored students at TCU who are preparing for their GREs. All made scores high enough to get them in to their desired graduate programs.
