Fun Facts

I come from Texas, but you wouldn't know it from talking to me. I came to Boston in 2012, and have since been enjoying little-big city living and writing with fountain pens.

About Me

I recently received my Master's in English literature, where I received honors as both the outstanding student in my cohort and the author of the best thesis in literature. I will soon go on to study for a Ph.D. in the same field at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Along the way I studied physics, mathematics, journalism, and exercise and sports science, and I accumulated a great deal of experience as a boston">tutor for both graduates and undergraduates in almost all subjects.

Experience

I've been boston">tutoring since I began working on my Master's in 2012, and continued to do so in my year off of school after I graduated. I tutored something like 10-20 students each week, in such diverse subjects as nursing, linguistics, math, English, history, and business. Furthermore, I have instructed college courses and facilitated many writing workshops for college students. The body of students I have tutored is incredibly diverse, including many non-native speakers of English.

Approach

I learned boston">tutoring from UMass Boston's world-class composition and pedagogy program. My goal in each session is not only to help you get the product you want (whatever that happens to be), but also to help you understand the process that leads to the product, with the hope that in the future you will be able to do the same thing without my help. Tell me what you want from your assignment, and we'll work out how to get there together.

English Tutoring

My degrees are in English literature: this has made me a keen reader and a precise user of the English language. I have a broad knowledge of the literary canon and a nuanced understanding of rhetorical strategies, which are applicable in many subjects other than English. In the Master's program at UMass Boston, I earned a perfect GPA and was recognized as the outstanding student in my cohort and received an award for my thesis.

Nursing Tutoring

In my time as a tutor at UMass Boston, perhaps 35% of the students I worked with were in the nursing program. My particular specialty is writing empirical research papers and literature reveiws, and less so mastering the examination-based content of courses like pathophysiology or pharmacology. However, many papers that I helped PhD students write in this field were recommended for publication by UMass Boston nursing professors, all of whom are widely recognized in their field.

Study Skills Tutoring

A good deal of my time in UMass Boston's tutoring program was spent helping students develop study strategies that work for them. Sometimes this requires work with time management: parceling out time in the week that suits the rhythm of one's school and work schedule, and also trying to find time for socializing. I know many techniques for laying out weekly schedules in a way that helps students see where their time goes and how they can better use it.

Algebra Tutoring

Though my degrees are in English, my early ambition was to become a physicist. I have retained an interest in math and science, though I have not taken a course in these areas for some time. However, my grasp of math has always been intuitive, and as a graduate student I occasionally helped students work through geometry and algebra problems at the college level. High-school-level math never left me, so I would have no trouble working through a problem set and coaching students on techniques for solving problems.

Homework Coach Tutoring

All of the work I did as a tutor at UMass Boston was precisely this: homework coaching. The structure of tutoring in this program was novel and well-suited for this kind of work: rather than meeting students once when they need help, we meet them each week at the same time. This allowed me to help them with one assignment over time, to work out with the student a structure for the development of this assignment, and to set deadlines for the different components of this development.
