Fun Facts

Something that no one who's ever met me would guess is that I grew up on a small sugar cane farm in Southern Louisiana. My family is thoroughly Acadian French/cajun/creole and I am actually the only one that does not speak cajun French fluently! My family and where I grew up is a huge part of my personality.

About Me

I'm a senior at Hunter College double majoring in British Literature and Cultural Anthropology. I've been on the Dean's List since my enrollment in 2012. I previously attended Loyola University of New Orleans for the same subjects, and was on the Dean's List there as well. I am due to graduate in May 2016, and I will be pursuing a PhD in Early Modern Literature.

Experience

During high school I realized my capacity for teaching and tutoring through helping friends and other students with papers and by leading study groups in my classes. Besides assisting peers, I have 3+ years of being a full-time nanny for 2 children in New York City. During this time I was responsible for assisting the eldest child, with learning to read and write. Otherwise, I have two brothers that are 10 and 12 years younger than me, so I've always been tutoring in some regard.

Approach

My approach to helping others is to first figure out how they learn best (visual, tactile, formal, conversational, etc.), and then implement the appropriate methodology in lessons. I learned in middle school that organization is actually a key element of my own capacity to learn, since it provides the opportunity to sort problems into smaller and more manageable sections (thus decreasing stress, which I find to be a surprisingly large hurdle to overcome).

English Tutoring

I have already completed all of my college coursework for my ELA degree. I have always received an A or higher, including the 2 graduate level classes that I took. All of my classes involved some type of workshopping element, so I'm familiar with the tactics necessary to assist others with their coursework.

Writing Tutoring

All of my English classes have been writing-intensive courses, and I have always received As or higher. I am very experienced with the process of writing short and long academic papers (argumentative and research). I also have experience with creative writing, and received an A+ for my coursework.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I have 2 years of experience teaching a child to read, and to be able to successfully comprehend texts. My coursework in English literature relies almost exclusively on intensive critical thinking, which I find to be the most important aspect of reading comprehension.

Arts Tutoring

I come from a family of artists (my grandmother paints as her profession), and have always had some type of involvement with art. I also took a formal Art History course and received an A. My years of nannying also involved a decent amount of assisting with art projects.

Biology Tutoring

I actually began my college career as a Biology major! Even though I eventually abandoned it for my true passion, English, I still had success (and As) in all of my Biology classes through high school and college. I informally tutored students in Biology while I was in high school.

History Tutoring

In my college career, I have studied World history, Greek history, Byzantine history, and American history. I received As for my coursework in all classes. In particular for World history and American history, I lead study groups with my peers in preparation for examinations.

Spanish Tutoring

I took Spanish through all of elementary, middle, and high school. During high school I took AP Spanish II, III, and IV. I received an A for my coursework in all Spanish classes.

Social Studies Tutoring

My coursework in Anthropology is simply a more intricate version of social studies, and I have received all As in my Anthropology coursework. I also have experience tutoring social studies specifically with the child of a family friend.

Homework Coach Tutoring

My high grades have not come completely naturally throughout my education. They are because of the hard work that I put in, and the time management tactics that I utilize to ensure that I am able to complete and mentally process all of my coursework.

Psychology Tutoring

I have taken 3 psychology classes in my college career, and also took a psychology course in high school. I received an A+ in all of my psychology courses. I still like to remain up to date with current psychological research as well.

Religion Tutoring

Although I am not particularly religious myself, I attended Catholic schools through high school (and for some of my college career). I am well versed in the materials necessary for success in a Religion course. I also took a World Religions class, for which I received an A.

Study Skills Tutoring

I have worked with both of my siblings (one of which is a special needs student) to help them formulate study practices that work for their specific needs and challenges. Both are high school students now and are successfully reaping the benefits of a set, personalized method of studying.
