Fun Facts

I am the oldest of four kids in a high energy yet laid-back family. We lived in the Middle East during my childhood and, consequently, visited many countries in Asia and Africa. All members of my family have practiced taekwondo together, and five out of six of us have earned a first-degree black belt (or higher)! While I used to dream of being "a normal kid," my life experiences have driven many of my passions and now I cherish them.

About Me

I graduated from the University of MissouriKansas City in 2014 with a B.A. in Communication Studies. From writing and marketing to substitute teaching and even specialty coffee, I've since worked in a variety of exciting fields. Learning is one thing that will always hold my interest, and I love to keep my future possibilities open by exploring as many skills as I can. portland">Tutoring is a natural fit for me as I've gravitated toward mentorship and education all my life.

Experience

Before enrolling in college, I had always dipped my toes in the portland">tutoring world. Helping my brothers with homework, being a martial arts instructor, and portland">tutoring at local elementary schools were regular parts of my routine. Prior to attending UMKC, I spent my first two years of college at MU in maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">Columbia. It was there that I took an honors-level course with the learning center's writing director. Through this class, I developed much of my portland">tutoring philosophy.

Approach

My approach to portland">tutoring is positive and clear. Whether it's a kindergartener or a college student, everyone wants to feel capable and listened to. I aim to facilitate an environment in which the student takes ownership of the learning process and becomes excited about the progress they make. Shortcomings are to be expected, but they can be overcome. All of us encounter subjects that challenge us — and this is a good thing!

English Tutoring

I took 24 credit hours of English, with an average GPA above 3.2, while obtaining my degree. I also took an honors-level course at MU that trained students to become writing tutors, and then I worked as a tutor for the university. I'm an avid reader who read more than 45 books in 2019.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Because I took many English and communication classes in college, writing and reading comprehension were always core skill sets in my courses. I haven't left reading behind since graduating — in fact, I only read more. I've read an average of 35 books (more than 250 pages on average) per year. I also received a 32 on the reading section of the ACT.

Writing Tutoring

Writing has always been the most important passion in my life. I took several courses focused around writing in college and still pursue writing today. My university classified certain courses as WI, or writing intensive, and I never earned a grade below a B+ in these courses. I also worked professionally as a writing tutor at one of my universities and scored a 10/12 on the ACT Writing test.

Literature Tutoring

At my high school, our IB English classes required oral presentations covering literature. These presentations were notoriously difficult, and we were told to expect the highest possible grade of 90% instead of 100%. I never earned a grade lower than 95% on these presentations. I also averaged above a 3.0 GPA for my literature courses in college.

Business Tutoring

During my senior year, I was the president of my school's Future Business Leaders of America chapter. I took our team to nationals in my team event, Management Decision Making. I also helped my parents run a business throughout high school and currently run a successful business with my husband.

AP English Tutoring

The IB program was offered at my high school, which was considered at least as difficult as AP-level courses and also required more projects. I earned some of the highest grades in my class for my ability to write powerful essays, understand complex themes in literature, and deliver concise oral presentations. I scored a 32/36 on the English section of the ACT and a 10/12 on the separate ACT Writing test.

Homework Coach Tutoring

Most of the classes I took in high school were advanced level. I also worked roughly 30 hours per week as a martial arts instructor. I was able to balance these activities, perform well on the ACT, and get admission into my ideal college.

Study Skills Tutoring

I once had a college professor tell me that I was one of the best students he'd had in more than 20 years of teaching. I excel at essay-style exams and have developed a system that helped me prepare for any other style of exam I've faced. While I can pass these strategies on to your student, I can also help them develop a personalized approach as I get to know their learning style.

Communication Tutoring

I earned my Bachleor of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of Missouri—Kansas City. I took more than 40 credit hours in this department and earned an average GPA above a 3.6. I so impressed a few of my communication professors that I still use them as references today.

ACT Math Tutoring

I scored a 27 on this section of the ACT. While English was always my stronger subject, math is the first subject I was interested in while in elementary school. I think my approach is suited well for students who are more interested in the arts and humanities and need help better understanding the STEM field. I find that they feel it's easier to connect with me.

ACT English Tutoring

I scored a 32 on this section of the ACT, took the most advanced English classes available at my high school, and went on to take more than 20 credit hours of English courses in college.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

While my school favored the ACT over the SAT, I scored a 1480 on a practice test version. My skills with the ACT testing method will transfer well to tutoring for the SAT.
