Fun Facts
I love to travel and explore new cultures and languages. I've lived and worked in 5 different countries and loved it. I also love reading as a way of 'traveling' My dad used to read to myself and my two younger brothers and that started me on a lifelong love of discovering the world through reading.
About Me
I have had a varied career in education; everything from tutoring to being a Leadership Coach in Abu Dhabi with Vanderbilt University. I was Foreign Director at a small school in Taiwan which was great fun and an interesting cultural experience. I didn't like the chickens and ducks hanging in the markets, though! I am now able to enjoy a more relaxed pace and am looking forward to working with students one-on one.
Experience
I have over 20 years in the field of education - much of that time was spent teaching regular, special and Esl students. I started by working on developing educational software when that field was brand new. I loved it so much, I went on to get my teaching credential and an MA in Education. My first job as a teacher was with a California company - Institute for Reading Development. That was the first time I knew I wanted to be a teacher.
Approach
I believe strongly that it is a teacher's responsibility to engage a student so they come to love learning. I start out by getting to know the child and their levels of performance in the chosen subjects. I then work with the student's teacher/s and parent/s to determine what we need to focus on first. We then get busy using a variety of strategies for learning and understanding the concepts. I also stress organizational and study skills - that's a good 50% of the equation..
