
Fun Facts
I grew up in the Midwest, and I came to Portland to pursue my PhD studies. I am proud to call the Northwest my home. I absolutely love it here, and enjoy hiking, cycling, and being outdoors. I summited Mt Saint Helens and South Sister, and have been on backpacking trips in the Three Sisters Wilderness and Eagle Cap Wilderness. I also participate in local cyclocross races. Additionally, I enjoy travelling and exploring, no matter if it is a weekend trip to Bend or a 2-week adventure to Australia.
About Me
I am a recent PhD graduate from Portland State University where I had a 3.87/4.0 GPA in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Currently I work for Tektronix as a Metrology Engineer. I really enjoy working with people, and I relish any opportunity to talk about math and science, whether it's a casual conversation or in an academic environment. Frequently, math and science are viewed as too complicated or confusing, and I enjoy dispelling those myths.
Experience
I taught a community-college level algebra class while working on my Master's degree at the University of Missouri. Also, I did one-on-one math tutoring for the athletic department while I was an undergraduate at Missouri.
Additionally, as a PhD student, I was able to fine-tune my communication skills. Quite often, I have had to convey complex thoughts and ideas to colleagues of different disciplines. From this, I have learned how to distill complex issues into basic concepts.
Approach
I am passionate about science and math, but I feel many students are intimidated by these subjects. Often, students feel as if they aren't a "science" or a "math" person, but I believe everyone is. Understanding these subjects is simply an issue of breaking down the concepts into easily digestible pieces. As a PhD student I learned how to communicate these pieces by using analogies, pictures, and gestures. The key to learning is finding an explanation that makes sense, and that is my goal.
