Fun Facts

I blame HGTV for my latest hobby. While recovering from a pretty serious illness, I had a lot of down time, most of which I spent watching HGTV. Despite the fact that most of my very large family is "mechanically challenged", myself included, I've somehow gotten it into my head that I should be able to complete several of the DIY projects they feature on their various shows. To put it politely, I've had some interesting results. I'm also learning (slowly) to surf while vising my fiancé in CA.

About Me

I'm a medical doctor. I completed two years of residency before I contracted meningitis, which spread to several other areas of my brain and spinal cord, putting me on an indefinite leave of absence. It's unlikely I'll be able to return to the rigors of residency anytime soon. I have an undergraduate degree in Biology and plan to return to school within the next two years to earn either an MBA or attend pharmacy school, more likely an MBA. I'd like to eventually work as a physician executive.

Experience

I began tutoring my undergrad yrs, during which I tutored Chem, Bio, Organic Chem, Molecular Bio, Genetics, Pathophys, Micro, Nutrition, nursing courses and Physics. I helped teach a course on Physical Diagnosis skills my second yr of med school and continued informally teaching throughout internship and residency. Before a brief return to residency, I tutored students on ACT and SAT test prep. I also acted as a transitional coach to students entering high school and a college admit prep coach.

Approach

My approach depends on the subject and student. It's necessary each student has a firm grasp of the base skills/concepts prior to moving to more complex ones. Each student learns differently. This may require new ways of approaching concepts and creativity when teaching in order to ensure understanding. The ACT/SAT are different in that knowing HOW to take a standardized test is key. These skills can be taught. Organization, stress management, time management and goal setting are also vital.

I took biochemistry I and II, receiving an A in both courses. Additionally, I tutored this course during undergrad as needed. I then took this Biochemistry again as my first course as a medical student, again doing well, receiving a B+. This topic helps form the foundation of several courses, such as Physiology and Pharmacology and as a result, I've retained the core concepts of this subject and am comfortable teaching it to others.

Biology Advance Tutoring

I majored in Biology as an undergrad. Throughout these years, I took several upper division Bio courses. These included: Molecular Biology, Pathobiology, Genetics, Human Metabolism, Bacteriology, Evolution, Cell Biology and Biochemistry. I received an A in each of these classes, maintaining a 3.95 Biology GPA. I then tutored the majority of these subjects throughout the last two years of undergrad before taking many of them a second time during medical school.

Chemistry I Tutoring

I received an A both semesters when taking this course as an undergrad. I also taught a Chemistry I lab and tutored this course extensively both while in college, and this past year when tutoring subject specific material on a one-to-one basis.

Microbiology Tutoring

I took Microbiology as a requirement for medical school in undergrad and again in medical school, receiving an A each time. I also tutored this subject throughout undergrad.

Nursing Tutoring

With an undergraduate degree in Biology, and a professional degree in Medicine, many of the courses I took both in undergrad and medical school overlapped with those the nursing students took. I did well in the vast majority of these classes, scoring A's in most. Additionally, during my undergrad years, I tutored many nursing students on a wide variety of subjects - from Anatomy and Physiology to Microbiology to Pharmacology and several others. For these particular students, I usually tutored during scheduled, regular, one-to-one sessions, rather than as a group or as a drop in student. I feel I have a good grasp on all the core subjects necessary to succeed as a nursing student.

Nutrition Tutoring

Nutrition is another one of my life-long interests, I took two courses on this subject in undergrad and received A's in both. I also took a nutrition course in medical school, receiving an A, as well as honors for the highest grade for this course. Additionally, nutrition was one of the science courses, and therefore one of the courses I tutored throughout my last two years of undergrad during my work in the Science Learning Center.

Organic Chemistry I Tutoring

Although it was a required subject for both my degree and for medical school, I probably would have taken it as an elective. I excelled in this class, scoring in the top 5%, often setting the curve and received an A both semesters. As with most of the other chemistry and biology courses I took, I also tutored students in this course on a regular basis.

Organic Chemistry II Tutoring

I excelled in this class, scoring in the top 5%, often setting the curve and received an A both semesters. As with most of the other chemistry and biology courses I took, I also tutored students in this course on a regular basis.

Psychology Tutoring

Psychology has always been an interest of mine, I considered double majoring in it. As a result, I took several psychology classes during undergrad, and did well in all of them, receiving all A's. In medical school, I also took courses on both psychology and psychiatry. Additionally, during undergrad, I tutored some psychology students as part of my tutoring job. I enjoy this subject, I strive to stay on top of the latest developments in this subject area and enjoy teaching it to others.

Homework Coach Tutoring

In addition to possessing excellent study habits and organizational skills, I've also had several students in which I acted as a homework coach. In this setting, we focused on the keys to succeeding scholastically: goal setting, organizational skills, time management, study habits, test taking skills and worked on finding a balance between school, extracurricular activities, friends and home life.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I've been a life-long reader and truly enjoy reading. I've received nothing but excellent grades in this subject area. I've had quite a bit of experience tutoring this subject, both as a tutor to elementary school kids throughout high school, as a tutor to middle aged kids during medical school and when preparing students for the reading comprehension portion of the ACT. I enjoy this subject, and am comfortable teaching each student new ways and strategies to more easily quickly become proficient at comprehending any given piece of writing.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

I scored into the 90th percentile when taking the SAT verbal and writing portions. Additionally, I've tutored many students on strategies and techniques to achieve their highest possible score in these areas.

Study Skills Tutoring

Forming good study skills and habits is important at any grade level, and only becomes more important as the student progresses through middle and high school and into college. I learned the hard way the importance of good study skills when it very quickly became necessary to master this skill in order to succeed in medical school. Additionally, I've had the opportunity to tutor several students in a transition program that helps them adjust to high school. Study skills, organizational skills, goal-setting, time management and test taking skills were all part of this course.

Algebra Tutoring

I excelled in this course in middle school. Both pre-algebra and algebra form the basis of more advanced math courses and it's nearly impossible to do well in these more advanced courses unless there is a solid foundation of pre-algebra and algebra skills. I took several advanced math courses and did well in all of them. Additionally, pre-algebra and algebra are subjects that are covered on the ACT. As such, I tutored and reviewed and sometimes taught these subjects in order to prepare students for the ACT for over a year.

Pre Algebra Tutoring

I excelled in this course in middle school. Both pre-algebra and algebra form the basis of more advanced math courses and it's nearly impossible to do well in these more advanced courses unless there is a solid foundation of pre-algebra and algebra skills. I took several advanced math courses and did well in all of them. Additionally, pre-algebra and algebra are subjects that are covered on the ACT. As such, I tutored and reviewed and sometimes taught these subjects in order to prepare students for the ACT for over a year.

Writing Tutoring

I took AP Literature and English, scoring A's and a 4 and a 5, respectively. Have an extensive amount of experience writing personal statement type essays for college, medical school and residency admittance applications. I also had the opportunity to tutor the writing portion for the ACT for each student I tutored. I'm comfortable with standard 5 paragraph essays, as well as more advanced forms of writing and have a clear understanding of the various ways of citing assignments written for a wide variety of subjects.

ACT English Tutoring

I took AP English as well as AP literature in High School, receiving an A and scoring a 4 and a 5, respectively, on the AP exams. When I took the ACT, I scored a 31 on the English portion. I also took several English classes as required in undergrad. Most importantly, I tutored this subject as part of a course covering all ACT subjects and am confident in my ability to capitalize on strengths, improve weaknesses, and teach strategies that will allow your student to excel in this area.

ACT Math Tutoring

Throughout high school, I received A's in each math course I took. Additionally, as it was necessary for my degree, I took several advanced math courses in college. While tutoring for the ACT, as many students struggle with math more than any other subject, it became necessary for me to ensure I had a very solid grasp of all the areas covered on the ACT math portion. I'm very comfortable not only teaching these subjects, but helping your student find a method of approaching the math portion that allows each student to receive the highest score possible for that individual student.

ACT Reading Tutoring

As the life-long reader, this subject came more easily to me than some of the other subjects, with me scoring a 33. As stated above, I took AP English a Literature, scoring a 4 and 5 respectively. Furthermore, I tutored this subject for over a year and am comfortable helping your student find an approach for approaching the subject as a whole, as well as each individual passage, that allows them to achieve the highest score possible for them.

ACT Science Tutoring

Due to a very strong science background, as illustrated by my undergraduate degree and degree in medicine, this subject is probably easiest for me to teach. As with the other subjects, while tutoring for the ACT previously, I'm become very confident in my ability to teach your student how to best approach the subject as a whole, as well as each individual passage, in order to maximize each student's strengths and achieve the highest possible score for him or her.

PSAT Tutoring

As I've successfully tutored many students for the SAT, I'm completely comfortable doing the same for the PSAT. I'm aware of the differences between the two and able to tailor the tutoring sessions accordingly. Like every other standardized test, much of excelling on the PSAT is learning strategies on how to best approach each subject area to maximize on each student’s strengths, as well as improve upon their weaknesses as much as possible. I'm comfortable teaching these strategies for the PSAT, in addition to the ACT and SAT.

Microsoft PowerPoint Tutoring

As with most students who attended school in the early 2000's and beyond, I became proficient with PowerPoint in order to make presentations on a wide variety of subjects for many different classes. The use of PowerPoint was required on many different occasions and it was necessary to be able to use this program in order complete several courses. During residency, I was making presentations approximately every 6 weeks, sometimes more frequently. I'm confident in my ability to utilize all the various components of the program and am comfortable passing that knowledge onto my students.

Microsoft Word Tutoring

As with PowerPoint, in order to be a successful student and professional in this current, technologically advanced era, it's necessary to be competent working with all aspects of Microsoft Word. I, like most individuals of my generation, use Microsoft Word on a nearly daily basis and I'm completely comfortable both with working with it and teaching that knowledge to others.
