Fun Facts

Being active, especially outdoors, makes me extremely happy. Whether it be biking, hiking, paddling, running or swimming, I can be found out in nature enjoying all that it has to offer. Apart from spending most of my time outdoors, I love reading a good book!! In fact, one of my most prized possessions is my library card. Additionally, I competed as an NCAA cross country/track athlete all four years while attending college.

About Me

I am a graduate student at Lipscomb University, currently pursuing my Master's in Education. Upon graduation, my goal is to teach World & U.S. History at the high school level. I also want to coach young adults in cross country and track. Prior to returning to school for further education, I attended Lipscomb for my undergraduate work; I graduated in May 2012, a Bachelor's of Arts degree in tow, with a 3.8 GPA as a Political Science major and History minor.

Experience

As a college athlete, a majority of my time was carved out for me between practice, lifting, studying, eating and sleeping. However, once I completed my degree I was able to expand upon a volunteer opportunity with the local chapter of Girls on the Run. Alongside this purposeful work, I have been able to commit time to become a cross country/track coach for the Harpeth Hall School. Both of these ventures have allowed me to interact with young people and help advance their minds and bodies.

Approach

Ever since I can remember, I have always loved school and learning. I realize though that not every child feels the same way, and may even need some assistance in certain subject areas. I want my students to know it is okay to ask for help and to challenge themselves. As a student, I was fortunate enough to have teachers who laid forth expectations in a positive manner. I, in turn, plan to encourage and push individuals so they may realize their true potential in all facets of their lives.

Geography Tutoring

Due to the coursework I took while at Lipscomb, I feel that a majority of it placed a great emphasis upon knowing one's geography. This especially came into play for my history minor, but I also was enrolled in an International Relations class that showed how certain attributes of any given country is vital to its relations at home and abroad. An individual can discern much about a nation and its people when it can be found on a globe or map.

History Tutoring

Alongside the Political Science major attained during my undergraduate experience, I also minored in History. A few of the classes that I enjoyed considerably at this time included World Civilization, 20th Century European History and the Civil War. In my personal opinion, it is extremely important that our society understands and learns from the events of the past.

History Advance Tutoring

Alongside the Political Science major attained during my undergraduate experience, I also minored in History. A few of the classes that I enjoyed considerably at this time included World Civilization, 20th Century European History and the Civil War. In my personal opinion, it is extremely important that our society understands and learns from the events of the past.

Political Science Tutoring

As stated in the previous sections of my profile, I graduated from Lipscomb University as a Political Science major. In fact, based on the coursework and final grades I was given the honor Magna cum laude upon graduation. Classes I took within this major included American Government & Political Thought; Constitutional Law; Micro- and Macro-economics; European Political Thought I & II, just to name a few.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I don't believe I can reiterate enough my love for reading! It was commonplace throughout college to be assigned numerous passages or chapters in any class that were to be read for the next class meeting. In college it is important to be prepared in advance for said classes, so one may understand what the professor is referring to during a lecture or presentation.

Study Skills Tutoring

Some students in middle and high school never had to study; however, college is a whole new ballgame! Especially early on in one's college career, it is important to establish proficient study skills because it will ensure long-term success in any course. Again, as a college athlete, it was critical that I study and keep my grades at a certain level in order to compete at the NCAA level. Studying is not always easy, but it can be done efficiently and serve a greater good when another individual is there to aid you.

AP History Tutoring

Alongside the Political Science major attained during my undergraduate experience, I also minored in History. One of my favorite classes that I took to complete this minor was Civil War. It covered a wide range of issues that consumed the United States during the 19th Century, including but not limited to Westward Expansion and Manifest Destiny, the debate regarding slavery, the fierce battles that transpired during the 1860s, followed by Reconstruction. In my personal opinion, it is extremely important that our society understands and learns from the events of the past.

English Tutoring

English and literature is one of those subjects that does not always come easy to everyone, and can actually be boring if one does not enjoy reading. Fortunately, I have found English to be one of my stronger subjects since a young age. With this ability I feel that I can help provide students a deeper understanding of what the subject has to offer.

Government Tutoring

As stated in the previous sections of my profile, I graduated from Lipscomb University as a Political Science major. In fact, based on the coursework and final grades I was given the honor Magna cum laude upon graduation. Classes I took within this major included American Government & Political Thought; Constitutional Law; Micro- and Macro-economics; European Political Thought I & II, just to name a few. I feel that my time at Lipscomb prepared me extensively with the knowledge to relate with middle school students and make government issues relevant to them.

Homework Coach Tutoring

The last thing any student wants to do is homework, especially a high school student who may be heavily involved with extra-curricular activities. In high school, I was a 3-sport athlete and a member in numerous clubs, so I understand the time commitment given to all the above. As a homework coach, I believe that I can show students helpful ways of managing time and completing the tasks assigned to them by teachers in a timely manner.

Writing Tutoring

It is a critical point in high school to have good writing skills, especially if a student has a goal of continuing their education in college. Not only will these good habits get you accepted to a secondary institution, but they will also serve you out in the real world when communicating with peers, coworkers, possible employers, etc. Writing was a major part of my work at Lipscomb; in order to complete my degree, I had to write a thesis for my Political Science Capstone class. It turned out to be a 60+ page work that I am extremely proud of to this day.

Social Studies Tutoring

Even though I have chosen to pursue a teaching certificate for grades 7-12, it does not mean that I am limiting myself to said levels when it comes to tutoring. I have worked with elementary students on numerous occasions and feel that I am able to make information relevant to them. It is important to build a foundation for social studies at a young age, so that children can begin to understand how far we have come in the world and to see the impact of cultural interactions not only in the past, but the present as well.
