Fun Facts
Hi, my name is Kevin. I grew up on lots of books, Japanese anime, British comedy, hip-hop, film, television, and video games. I still enjoy all of these things today, and they even influence my research subjects. Hip-Hop, in particular, fueled my love of poetry and language; without it, I wouldn't have decided to be a writer and English teacher. I most likely would've continued my high school love of computer programming. One day I hope to found and manage a literary arts center which helps writ
About Me
I am an MFA graduate student at San Diego State University, a poet, and part-time micro publisher. I've worked as a writing consultant, a first-year composition instructor, and an editorial assistant. I love inspiring children, so I've also worked with the Young Writers’ Workshops at North Carolina State and Duke University. I enjoy writing screenplays, filming video adaptations of poetry, and reading about screenwriting and poetics. Some of my own work has recently been recently published in Poetry Quarterly, Connotations Press: An Online Artifact, and Aries: A Journal of Art and Poetry. I hope to pursue a doctoral program, and to sell a screenplay in the next five years.
In the past, I've worked as a writing tutor at San Diego State and in North Carolina at East Carolina University. At SDSU, as an instructional assistant, I worked with the same group of Academic Reading and Writing students to improve academic essays from sentence level problems to structure and focus, reinforced the concepts learned in class, and aided students in-class during small group activities. At ECU, as a writing consultant, I worked with individual Composition students from many different classes to improve papers from sentence level problems to structure and focus. While at ECU, I also taught to Composition classes, and it really helped me understand how to apply more effective teaching and tutoring techniques.
Tutoring, to me, is an opportunity to share the “I wish I would've known’s” and the “I'm so glad I learned’s.” I also see it as a collaborative learning effort. We all have something to learn from one another, and I see myself more as a guide than anything else. We'll discuss the issues and generate approaches to solve them. Thinking critically is always important, but you can have fun while doing it.
