In my spare time, I coach volleyball and I substitute as a player in an Women's Adult Volleyball league. I love to travel and see different parts of the country/world. I love poetry and jazz music.

About Me

I have a Psychology and Criminal Justice double major from the University of Northwestern in Saint Paul, MN. I am now receiving a Master's of Education from Johns Hopkins University. During the day I am a 8th grade English Language Arts and Reading teacher in Dallas, TX. I am passionate about academics and learning. I specialize in working with education/minnesota/minneapolis">Special Education and ESL students.

Experience

My specific minneapolis">tutoring background is in high school Physics, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, and Spanish. I have a youth development background as a former YMCA employee for approximately 3 years. In this position, I learned to work with youth of various socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. I have experience working with students who have emotional, mental, or behavioral disabilities. I also have an academic minneapolis">tutoring background through study skills programs.

Approach

My approach is person-centered. I establish an end goal, however, my ultimate goal is for their to be a progress in learning. I focus on the retention of content, rather than the pace at which information is obtained.

Algebra Tutoring

For the past 3 years I was a Teacher's Aide in an Albegra 1 & Algebra 2 classroom. During this time, I co-taught lessons with the instructor and learned strategies conducive to the learning of students ages 12-17. During this time, I graded and corrected homework as well as exams. I am familiar with the acronyms of Algebra and the necessary formulas for problem-solving.

Physics Tutoring

I have background knowledge in Biology and Chemistry courses. However, the bulk of my experience came from being a Teacher's Aide in a high school Physics & AP Physics classroom for 3 years. I assisted in test modifications and assignment/project completion for various students. For students requiring additional services, I would provide 1-1 tutoring during the class session at least once a week. I did group review sessions once a week as well and before every test/final exam. I am well-versed in Physics lingo and equations.

Salsa Dancing Tutoring

I have been recreationally salsa dancing for over 5 years. During my youth development experience with the YMCA, I taught salsa dancing to students ages 17 and under. I also dance with a professional Salsa club once a month.

Criminal Justice Tutoring

I have a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from University of Northwestern in which my GPA for the content area was well above 3.3. During this time, I received a wealth of field experience. I volunteered as a juvenile justice counselor for at-risk girls, I interned as a Reentry counselor for ex-offenders, and I tracked statistics relating to disadvantaged populations and the criminal justice system.

Graduate Level Writing Tutoring

I am currently a graduate student of Johns Hopkins University. I have also been in advanced writing courses since I was a freshman in high school. Prior to entering advance writing courses, I was learning Latin and it's application to reading and writing in English. I have facilitated and participated in peer reviews and know the proper correction strategies and symbols.

Conversational Spanish Tutoring

I have at total of 12 credits for Beginner Spanish, and 2 credits for Intermediate Spanish from North Hennepin Community College. Through various exchange programs, I have been immersed in the Spanish culture and social conversations. Most recently, I participated in an educational excursion to Mexico. Here I practiced translating and engaging in educational dialogue. As an 8th grade English Language Arts and Reading teacher, I serve a population of 15% ELL (English Language Learners) and I use spanish with them daily to assist with my whole group lessons.
