Fun Facts
I have a little bit of interest in everything, or at least many things. I am an animal lover, as my four at home can attest. I love to hike, bike, swim, play tennis, speak foreign languages (however poorly), travel, and (of course) read. If I had a few more lives and infinite wealth, I would get degrees in anthropology (cultural and archaeological), sociology, psychology, history, science/oregon/portland">computer science, mathematics, astronomy, and architecture, just to name a few.
About Me
I recently graduated with my M.A. in Literature from Miami University of Ohio. Before that, I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a B.A. in English. There, my minors were French and German. My current academic interests are in novel theory and eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries British literature and culture. When it comes to learning, though, I am not very picky.
Before leaving Louisville, KY for my significant other's job transfer, I tutored at Educational Resources. With many of my students, I followed a program called Visualizing and Verbalizing, which helps students with reading-comprehension/oregon/portland">reading comprehension issues learn to image as they read. With each student, I adapted the program to work on other comprehension issues he or she faced, such as vocabulary, familiarity with complex syntax, and recognizing and deciphering figurative language. I also tutored students in literary analysis, writing, and study skills. During my M.A. program, I also taught Freshman Composition courses as a teaching assistant. In these courses, I taught composition through two lenses: literary analysis and rhetorical analysis. In this role, I developed assignments, activities, and lesson materials within departmental curricula guidelines which I used to successfully teach general organization and composition, literary analysis, rhetorical analysis, research skills, research incorporation, and critical thinking. Even in a class of twenty-three students, I kept a focus on individualized instruction, offering detailed feedback on each student's work, creating in-class time for one-on-one instruction, and promoting out-of-class, individualized help. I kept in mind, too, the different personalities of each of my classes. I consistently sought feedback from my students throughout the semester in order to best tailor each class to their needs and interests.
