Fun Facts

I grew up in a rural town just outside of Cincinnati, OH. Along with my parents and 2 younger brothers, we always had at least 2 dogs as part of our family. When I moved to VA, my little Gizmo got to join me in this adventure! My love for dogs is equally matched with my love for volleyball. I played volleyball throughout high school & college, and still play competitively to this day. I've coached 4th grade, JV and Varsity high school teams in Cincy. I miss it and I hope to coach again soon!

About Me

I graduated from Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, OH with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a minor in Forensic Science. I spent a few years working at a phosphoric acid plant, starting as a lab technician before becoming the production coordinator. It was a great experience, but my passion for solving crimes led me to VA. I am now at VCU pursuing my Master's in Forensic Science with a concentration in forensic biology. My career goal is to work at a federal or private lab as a DNA analyst!

Experience

Throughout my undergrad, I worked as both a writing center consultant and a math/science tutor. In the writing center, I worked with college students on perfecting their writing abilities. It didn't matter what stage the paper was in; we could work on brainstorming a thesis, constructing an outline or even reviewing a draft paper. As a tutor I helped with a variety of courses, though my focus was mainly in math or science subjects. At VCU, I currently teach freshman level biology labs.

Approach

I believe that students relate and understand information differently, so as a tutor it is my responsibility to learn what is best for each individual student. I like to get to know each student I work with so I can explain the material in a way that the student can relate and comprehend. It is my goal to create an environment in which the student feels comfortable asking questions and challenging ideas so they not only grasp the concept at hand, but build their critical thinking skills as well.

Biochemistry Tutoring

I took multiple biochemistry classes and labs in college, earning all A's and B's. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. I am currently working on my Master's in Forensic Science with an emphasis in forensic biology (DNA). Understanding nucleic acids and DNA requires a strong background in biochemistry.

Biology I Tutoring

I took Biology I and Biology II in college, earning an A in both classes and their corresponding labs. Currently, I am a teaching assistant for Biology 151 labs at VCU. These labs are meant for science majors and I am responsible for teaching them on my own.

Chemistry I Tutoring

I took Chemistry I and Chemistry II in college, earning an A in both classes and their corresponding labs. I also tutored both classes as an undergrad. As a fun fact, I originally declared chemistry as my major after taking a chemistry class in high school. That chemistry class was the reason I entered the science field.

Algebra Tutoring

I took Algebra and Algebra II in high school, earning an A in both. Algebra is essential for being able to understand higher level math and science concepts and I would not have been able to earn my degree without fully grasping the concepts taught in algebra. During my undergrad, I also tutored a high school student in Algebra and Algebra II.

Math Tutoring

In high school I took numerous math courses, including Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus. I earned an A in all of them except for 1 semester of AP Calculus. In college I took Calculus I and Calculus II and earning an A in both. While in college, I also worked in the math center during my junior and senior year.

Pre Algebra Tutoring

While I did not take Pre-Algebra because I tested out of the class, I took Algebra and Algebra II in high school, earning an A in both. Algebra is essential for being able to understand higher level math and science concepts and I would not have been able to earn my degree without fully grasping the concepts taught in algebra. During my undergrad, I tutored my youngest brother in Pre-Algebra.

Science Tutoring

I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, so taking a variety of science classes was necessary to obtain that degree. In high school, I took all honors and AP science classes and maintained straight A's. I have also tutored students in various science classes from both high school and college.

Writing Tutoring

I took Honors English in high school and Written Word in college, earning an A in both. As a freshman, I was invited to work in the Writing Center at Mount St. Joseph University where I spent 4 years helping students of all ages improve their writing skills. Even though my major is in the science field, solid writing skills are extremely important for lab notebooks, reports and articles (especially if you want to get your research published!)

Elementary Math Tutoring

In high school and college I have taken and aced as well as tutored many different math courses. My success in these classes would not have been possible without fully understanding the basic concepts of math that are taught at the elementary level. At this age, it is important that good habits (mathematically speaking) are taught early while making sure the student does not get frustrated with the learning process. Math really is fun!

Microsoft Excel Tutoring

I grew up with Microsoft Excel and it is a running joke between my close friends and family that my life is organized through spreadsheets. I used Excel as a student for data analysis and graphing as well as at home to plan vacations, create budgets, compare items and more. As a professional I created several spreadsheets for tracking upcoming inspections, managing action items and their due dates and trending the progress of our goals. I am very comfortable with Excel and have used VBA and macros before, but I will say my knowledge of macros is limited.

Microsoft PowerPoint Tutoring

I grew up with Microsoft PowerPoint and used it frequently in both high school and college to create presentations. In my role as a production coordinator after I graduated, I was in charge of creating and presenting trainings to employees and I accomplished this task using Microsoft PowerPoint. I continue to use PowerPoint throughout my studies as both a student and a teacher.

Microsoft Word Tutoring

I grew up with Microsoft Word and am very comfortable using it. All of my papers, reports, flyers and more have been completed using Word. I used many different versions of Microsoft Word in the past; however, I am currently using the most recent version available so I am also familiar with the different templates that are available for use.

Criminal Justice Tutoring

As an undergraduate I took an introductory criminal justice course and several forensic science courses, earning an A in all of them. I am very passionate about criminal justice and that is why I am pursuing a higher education in forensics. Every class I am currently taking is forensic based and will be relative to a variety of criminal justice courses.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I am a strong writer/student due to my reading skills. I have taken honors literature classes in both high school and college and passed every one with an A. As a Biochemist, it is important for me to be able to read a scientific research article and comprehend the problem that was studied and what results/lessons were learned.
