Fun Facts
I'm originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I grew up three blocks away from Copacabana beach. I have recently found the joys of figure skating! I'm still learning and it's slow going, but the more I practice, the less I fall. Soon, with enough practice, I'll be good enough to skate around the rink without falling. Have any pointers? I could use them!
Languages are one of my greatest passions, and my latest hobby is teaching myself Italian. È molto divertente! (It's great fun)
About Me
I have a BA in English from KU with departmental honors. I graduated with a 3.80 GPA after getting an Associate's Degree with a 4.0 GPA. I also hold a BA in Journalism attained while I still lived in Brazil. Currently, I'm a Ph.D. student at KU in Rhetoric, Composition, and Language in the Department of English. I work on campus at the Writing Center tutoring undergrad and grad students on writing at any stage. My ultimate goal is to spend my days teaching and tutoring.
Experience
I'm a native Portuguese and English speaker. I taught English at a foreign language school between the ages of 15 and 20. I can relate to the specific needs of an individual student, keeping in mind that everyone learns differently. I'm also a Graduate Writing Consultant at the University of Kansas, working with students on their writing and language skills at any stage of their project. Next semester, I'll start teaching Composition at KU and have my own classes. I can't wait!
Approach
My main approach is to figure out how a student learns—visually, aurally, note-taking, what have you. That's the secret. Find out how someone learns the best and adapt the content to their specific abilities. I also have very effective study skills that I make a point to impart, and they help my students succeed academically. Work smart while working hard, and have a little fun while doing it.
