Something most people know about me is that I love animals! I currently have a dog and a kitten. I've had many pets over the years.
About Me
I am a freshman Math major at Wayne State University. I have a passion for math and teaching. My ultimate goal is to become a mathematician. I hope I will be able to find new ways to teach math to make it more understandable and enjoyable for everyone.
Experience
As a member of the WSU Math Corps, I've had the opportunity to tutor students daily for six weeks every summer. The bonds I've made with my students have grown past the camp. I've been given the opportunity to serve as a mentor for them throughout the year until it is time for Math Corps to start again. This has been my routine for five years. My students grades have ranged from incoming 7th graders to incoming 9th graders. I have also tutored elementary school students for another program.
Approach
School has always been enjoyable for me. The older I get, the more I realize how rare this is. I now take time to analyze what it is that makes learning difficult for students. I've noticed that students often feel that they cannot make mistakes or ask questions. As a tutor, I emphasize that self reflection is very important. It is my responsibility to show them that when mistakes are made, something everyone does, they must serve as learning experiences. This is necessary for learning.
