About Me
I am a recent graduate of lawrence-college">Sarah Lawrence College in New York, who grew up in Southern California, and recently moved back to Los Angeles County. I studied British Literature, Film History, Neuropsychology, Linguistic Anthropology, Philosophy, Theatre, Latin, Theories of the Creative Process, Language Development, Statistics, Genetics, Sociology of Education, and English: History of a Language, which included Sociolinguistics, Phonetics, Semantics, Pragmatics, Politeness, & IPA.
Experience
I've done fieldwork at both my college's Early Childhood Center, and a local elementary school, both with classes of 4-5 year old children. After graduation, I worked at 3 different schools: 2 preschools and 1 elementary, working with children between the ages of 2 and 6. I've also privately tutored students of all ages, including adults, primarily teaching English as a second language.
Approach
I treat my students as equals, with kindness, respect, encouragement, and enthusiasm. I believe in the power of positive reinforcement. I am very animated, and always try to infuse my lessons with humor and fun. I try to relate the material to my students' actual lives whenever possible.

Liberal Arts
Anatomy Physiology I Tutoring
I took Anatomy & Physiology during my senior year of high school, and did very well.
Arts Tutoring
I've studied many different art forms from Language Arts to Performing Arts, and I have a great deal of experience with and passion for all types of art. My specialities include the English language and Acting, which I've been studying formally for over a decade now.
Child Development Tutoring
During my junior year of college, I took a course called Language Development, for which I did fieldwork at my school's Early Childhood Center. The following year, I took a course called the Sociology of Education, for which I did fieldwork at a local elementary school. For both courses, I worked with children between the ages of 4 and 5. After graduation, I worked at three different schools: a Waldorf preschool (ages 2-4), a Catholic preschool (ages 3-5), and a Catholic elementary school (ages 4-14). I was the Developmental Kindergarten aide, so my students were 4 and 5, but I also did lunch duty, recess duty, and after school care, which involved students up to 8th grade. However, I specialize in Pre-School & Pre-Kindergarten (ages 3-5).
Communication Tutoring
I have excellent communication skills: written, oral, and non-verbal.
Education Tutoring
I have studied Language Development, the Sociology of Education, and worked in Early Childhood Education.
Elementary Statistics Tutoring
I have taken Statistics both during my senior year of high school and my junior year of college. I decided to take it again, because I wanted to deepen my understanding of the field. It's my favorite type of math, because it seems the most practically applicable, versatile, and relevant to my actual life.
English Tutoring
I've been studying English since birth, and have excelled at it for the majority of my life. It's my favorite language, and the one I'm most proficient in. I specialize in Vocabulary, but I also enjoy Spelling, Grammar, Syntax, and other formal elements of the language. My writing skills are fairly advanced. I got a perfect score on the essay portion of the SAT, but I've continued to hone my skills throughout college. I've also studied various types of Linguistics (Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Linguistic Anthropology, as well as elements of formal Linguistics, such as Phonetics, Semantics, Pragmatics, IPA, and Conversational Analysis).
Latin Tutoring
I took a year of Latin during my junior year of college. We used Wheelock's textbook, but we also studied the Aeneid, and each of us did an independent comparative translation project.
Literature Tutoring
I've excelled in English Literature ever since I learned how to read. It was my best and favorite subject from elementary to middle to high school and even in college. I took AP English in high school, and studied British Literature in college. My favorite period for Literature and Drama is the Victorian Era, and two of my favorite authors/playwrights from that time are Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw. I'm also a huge fan of British satire, including for example the work of Jonathan Swift.
Philosophy Tutoring
During my senior year of high school, I took an introductory Philosophy class called "Search for Truth." Then, during my sophomore year of college, I took a course called "Philosophy & Literature: the Prince & the Poet." This class compared great works of Philosophy with great works of Literature, such as Shakespeare's Hamlet & Machiavelli's The Prince for example. Other material covered included Goethe's Faust, Dostoyevsky's Crime & Punishment, Nietzsche's Beyond Good & Evil, and Descartes' Discourse on the Method. The objective of the course was to allow the juxtaposition of these works to further illuminate their meaning and enrich our understanding of them.
Psychology Tutoring
I've studied Neuropsychology (Synapse to Self: the Neuroscience of Self-Identity), Psycholinguistics (Language Development), and Theories of the Creative Process.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
I've excelled in the Reading Comprehension section of every standardized test I've ever taken, including the SAT, ACT, AP English & Spanish, and the English & Spanish Subject Tests (SAT IIs).
Sociology Tutoring
I've studied the Sociology of Education and Sociolinguistics. The former involved fieldwork in the Pre-Kindergarten class of a New York public elementary school, as well as an independent conference project on College Dating Behavior (Hook-up Culture vs. Monogamous Romantic Relationships). The latter involved four conference projects on Received Pronunciation, Conversational Analysis (specifically during interactions with strangers), Standard Language Ideology (exploring the privilege associated with concealing one's geographic origins, while revealing their class, education, and socioeconomic background; exhibiting standard language as a form of social currency), and gender differences among several phonetic and lexographic linguistic practices of Native Angelenos (the California Vowel Shift, upspeak, vocal fry, and the use of certain words, such as "dude," "oh my god," "totally," "like," etc.). I wanted to figure out if these stereotypical vocal features were exhibited more by a certain subset of my sample, in order to determine which factor they were most motivated by (i.e. age, gender, region, education, class, etc.).
Spanish I Tutoring
I took Spanish I during my freshman year of high school, but it turned out to be below my skill level at the time. The class was not challenging enough for me at that point, because although this was the beginning of my formal study of the language, I've been exposed to Spanish nearly my entire life. It was spoken by my maternal grandmother, and the various nannies that raised me throughout my childhood. Following Spanish I, I took Spanish II-IV, culminating my studies at the AP level. That being said, I think I'm more than qualified to tutor students at this introductory level.
Spanish II Tutoring
I took Spanish II Honors during my sophomore year of high school, ending with AP Spanish IV during my senior year.
Speech Pathology Tutoring
I've studied certain aspects of Phonetics and Phonology, so I know where sounds are made in the mouth, and I know how to classify those sounds (fricatives, affricates, etc.). I've studied the vowel chart, and I'm familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet. In addition to my Linguistics studies, I also have over a decade of acting training, which involves vocal exercises to improve diction (enunciation), projection, and other oral performance skills.
Writing Tutoring
I feel very confident in my command of the English language. I have many years of academic writing experience, and I have honed those skills through the extensive demands of my recently earned undergraduate degree.
Writing Advance Tutoring
I've written countless essays throughout my academic career, including several conference projects, which are the most challenging of all. A Sarah Lawrence College conference project is akin to a senior thesis at a conventional university, but we did them for each class every semester. Each student chooses a topic to research independently, completely separate from their regular coursework, and meets with their professor every other week to discuss their progress. At the end of the semester, they will have produced an extensive, original piece of writing that typically makes unexpected connections and provides unique, compelling insights into an area of study they find most intriguing. This combination of genuine interest and intellectual rigor generally produces fascinating, engaging work.
Algebra Tutoring
I took Pre-Algebra in 7th grade, Algebra I in 8th grade, and Algebra II in high school. I feel more confident tutoring Pre-Algebra and Algebra I than Algebra II.
AP English Tutoring
AP English was both my favorite and best class in high school, when I took Language and Composition my Junior Year and Literature and Composition my Senior Year. I always passed the AP Test, but more importantly, I enjoyed my in-class experiences, reading, writing, and discussing the material with my professor and fellow classmates. I was in Honors English before that, so I've always taken the highest level English class available to me, and received the highest grade possible. I am not only competent, but also eager to help any students who need additional assistance in this area of study.
History Tutoring
In elementary school, I studied the history of California, the United States of America, and the rest of the World, mostly focusing on Europe and Asia. In high school, I started with a class called "Humanities" my first year, which covered a variety of topics. The following year I took "Modern World History." My third year I took U.S. History, and my last year I took Government one semester and Economics the next. I did well in all those subjects, and would have no problem tutoring current students.
Religion Tutoring
I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten to the end of high school, and even my pre-school was Christian, so I attended religiously-affiliated schools for about 15 years. During that time, Religion was always a required course for us to take. Our studies mostly focused on Catholicism, and Christianity more broadly, but I took a World Religions course in high school that covered Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring
I took the SAT during my senior year of high school with no preparation whatsoever, and got a perfect score on the essay (a 12 I think was the highest you could get at the time), and a 1,350 out of 1,600 on all the other English/language related portions of the test. Vocabulary, Spelling, Grammar, Syntax, and Punctuation are a few of my specialities. I enjoy both the form and content of the English language, and excel at instructing all aspects of it.
Science Tutoring
I've taken Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, and Genetics, but not Physics. I did well in all four areas, so I'm sure I could help current students
Statistics Tutoring
I took Statistics in both high school and college, because it's my favorite type of math, and I wanted to deepen my understanding of it. I prefer it, because it's the most practically applicable of the "higher maths" we learn, and it seems the most relevant to our actual lives. It's also very versatile, because it's involved in so many fields, such as the Social Sciences for example. Statistics is used in nearly every industry though, from Medicine to Advertising (Demographics, Consumer Reports, etc.). I love it, because it helps me understand the world in a quantifiable way.
Biology Tutoring
I took general Biology during my freshman year of high school, then I took Anatomy & Physiology my senior year, and Genetics in college. I did very well in each of those classes, so I feel capable tutoring students in any or all of them.
ISEE Tutoring
I took the ISEE when I was in 8th grade, because one of the high schools I applied to required it. I ended up attending that school, so I apparently did well enough to be accepted, and I'm sure I could help other students accomplish that goal as well.
Pre Algebra Tutoring
I took Pre-Algebra in seventh grade, and don't remember struggling with it at all. It's been a long time, but I think I did fairly well, and don't doubt my ability to help current students with the material.
Spanish Tutoring
I've been exposed to Spanish from a very young age. Growing up, my grandmother, mother, maternal aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as my nannies all spoke Spanish to me. My formal instruction began in middle school, which continued into high school. I've taken Spanish I, Spanish II Honors, Spanish III, and AP Spanish IV. I took a year of Latin in college, and am currently refreshing my Spanish with the app Duolingo.
Math Tutoring
In addition to basic Arithmetic (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Decimals, etc.), I've taken Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Statistics. I never took Pre-Calculus or Calculus. Statistics is my favorite, so I've taken it at both the high school and college levels.
Elementary Math Tutoring
As someone who understands the importance of being patient with a math student, allowing them ample time to think through their work, encouraging them to do it methodically and thoroughly, and last but not least, trying to foster a relaxed, comfortable environment, I think I'm the right tutor for someone who is struggling to excel in the fast-paced, high-pressure academic climate many students often face.
Social Studies Tutoring
I did very well in Social Studies growing up. I've always gotten high grades in that subject area.
Macintosh Tutoring
I've been using Mac products for over a decade now, including desktop computers, laptops, iPads, iPods, and iPhones.
Microsoft PowerPoint Tutoring
I learned how to use PowerPoint in elementary school, and continued to use it throughout high school and college.
Microsoft Word Tutoring
I've been using Microsoft Word nearly my entire academic career, and beyond. I started using it in elementary school, used it throughout high school and college, and continue to use it in my post-graduate life as well.
