Fun Facts

I was born in Istanbul, Turkey and have been living here my whole life - parents are immigrants from Turkey. I speak Turkish and English fluently. I'm an only child.

Some of my hobbies are watching Japanese anime, going to the movies with friends and family, eating good food (fav. restaurant here is either Banning's Pie Place or Chang's Mongolian Grill) or just sitting at my house relaxing. I used to be an avid gamer when I was younger, but those days are past with school and all.

About Me

I'm a Master's student in science/oregon/portland">Computer science, and have been on honor roll pretty much my entire college career. I also have a BS in Mechanical Engineering - I switched to CS because I found out that I wasn't as good at practically applying the things I learned in class in Mechanical Engineering to the real world. So I'm actually pretty new, and know what it's like to have to learn everything from scratch in such a short amount of time.

Experience

I have been a teaching assistant to the undergraduate Operating Systems class at Portland State University since Spring 2016. I have experience in creating grading rubrics, setting standards, proof-reading technical reports and teaching students on how to improve them further, and also explaining some slightly complicated material in simple terms. I also tutored my high school classmate back in my senior year in Geometry, and managed to improve her grade from I believe a D to a B.

Approach

I've found that being calm and fun is the best way to engage students - people like to learn when the material is engaging and when the teacher is also relaxed and easy going [but strict when they need to be]. This holds true for all students, regardless of whether they're kids or are in college. So as a tutor on here, my goal is to make learning exciting and enriching for whoever I teach.

C++ Tutoring

Portland State University:
CS 162 - Pass (Credit by Exam)
CS 163 - Pass (Credit by Exam)
CS 202 - A

C++ is the language that many students start out with at Portland State University. I also instruct in C to students in the Operating Systems class when they have difficulties.

Calculus I Tutoring

AP Calculus score: 5.0/5.0

I took IB Higher Level Math I in my junior year of high school where we learned Calcs. I - III. I got all As during the term in the subject.

Calculus 2 Tutoring

AP Calculus score: 5.0/5.0

I took IB Higher Level Math I in my junior year of high school where we learned Calcs. I - III. I got all As during the term in the subject.

Calculus 3 Tutoring

AP Calculus score: 5.0/5.0

I took IB Higher Level Math I in my junior year of high school where we learned Calcs. I - III. I got all As during the term in the subject.

Chemistry I Tutoring

I took Chemistry I in College, and got an A. My engineering degree required me to take two trimesters worth of Chemistry, including the labs.

College Algebra Tutoring

I already took Calcs 1 - III which use material from college algebra.

Computer Programming Tutoring

I am a Computer Science MS student, so I know how to program on my own. I also help students in the Operating Systems class understand how to write their programs in a clean, easy way.

Computer Science Tutoring

I am a Computer Science MS student with all As in the programming intensive undergraduate courses at Portland State (except for [ironically] the Operating Systems class, where I ended up with a B+).

Computer Science Tutoring

I am a Computer Science MS student with all As in the programming intensive undergraduate courses at Portland State (except for [ironically] the Operating Systems class, where I ended up with a B+).

Mechanical Engineering Tutoring

I averaged As in Fluid Mechanics, both regular and applied, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials. Basically, I know the undergraduate early courses pretty well.

Math Tutoring

I have taken up to Calc IV. In math, I did tutor a friend of mine for money (~$10 an hour) in his pre-calculus course at PCC. I raised his overall grade by one letter despite being under pressure [we started the tutoring about three weeks before the term ended].

Math Advance Tutoring

I took up to Calc IV, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, etc.

Physics I Tutoring

I studied this material on my own without taking the class, and took an exam from the Physics Professor at PSU. Ended up with an A.

Physics II Tutoring

I studied this material on my own and took an exam from a Physics Professor at PSU. Ended up with an A.

Pre Calculus Tutoring

I tutored a friend of mine for $10/hr in this subject area and managed to improve his grade by one letter.

Study Skills Tutoring

I'm a pretty good independent learner, you can see that from my credit by examination grades on my transcript (especially for CS, where I had took tests for four classes, and Physics, where I took tests for three classes). Being an independent learner, I believe I can help students understand what to focus on when they study the material on their own.

Trigonometry Tutoring

I've taken up to Calc IV and Differential Equations, and I was very good with trigonometric identities in my freshman year of high school when I took Pre-Calculus.

Writing Tutoring

I grade a lot of reports in the OS class, and have given advice to many students on how to improve their technical writing. Furthermore, I've done very well in my humanities courses at Portland State, as can be seen from my transcript, which involved a lot of writing in each class. I am not good at creative writing, but am good at argumentative/persuasive writing and believe I can help people improve this area.

C Tutoring

The OS class uses C to program all of the projects. I have also been exposed to C code in my low level systems programming class, so I have good familiarity with the language (good enough for teaching).

HTML Tutoring

I worked with HTML in my summer internship when designing a front end for our back end application.

Java Tutoring

I used Java during my summer internship to implement a REST backend with my team, so I know quite a bit about the language's various features (generics, collections to name a few).

Javascript Tutoring

I used JavaScript during the summer to help create the front end for my team's backend, mostly through the Angular framework.

MATLAB Tutoring

I used MATLAB quite a bit in my engineering classes, so I know how to work my way through the language.

Microsoft Excel Tutoring

I have been using Excel for my engineering and computer science classes. Also in the summer of 2014, I did extensive data processing in Excel at my NASA internship for some experiments that were run in the SMiRF lab.

PHP Tutoring

I did a little bit of PHP by adding some code into a very large project at my summer internship. However, given that it is a programming language, I can learn it relatively quickly so that I can teach the students how to program in it (many languages share common features, mostly similar to C, so it isn't hard to pick up a new language when you use idioms from other languages to further your understanding).

Python Tutoring

I don't have python experience. However, given that it is a programming language, I can learn it relatively quickly so that I can teach the students how to program in it (many languages share common features, mostly similar to C, so it isn't hard to pick up a new language when you use idioms from other languages to further your understanding).

SQL Tutoring

I did a little bit of SQL code in my summer internship. However, given that it is a domain specific language, I can learn it relatively quickly so that I can teach the students how to program in it (many languages share common features, mostly similar to C, so it isn't hard to pick up a new language when you use idioms from other languages to further your understanding).
