Fun Facts
I spent the first 18 years of my life in Texas before moving to Boston for college. Up to that point, I had never seen snow. I'm still delighted whenever I have the chance to go out and build a snowman or go sledding! I also danced for 15 years, mostly ballet and Texas drill team, but no longer can due to a knee injury. My favorite things are cooking, cats and sunshine. ☀️
About Me
I'm in my fourth year at Northeastern University, where I'm majoring in journalism and pursuing minors in English, Spanish and history. I've made the Dean's List three times, completed over 1,000 hours of community service and held multiple internships. My passions lie in education and the dissemination of information, so I hope to work in nonfiction writing, editing or production when I graduate in December.
Experience
I tutored extensively in high school in English, math and history. I was a member of almost every national honor society. I even helped found a tutoring program for students in advanced classes at my high school. I love working with students one-on-one! Most of my office experience has been in the journalism and textbook publishing industries through internships. I additionally spent three years as an assistant dance teacher and one year as a preschool instructor.
Approach
I really believe that individualized learning is the best approach to education. When a student can foster a relationship with a tutor or teacher who really understands their needs, they'll have a better experience and will be able to learn more effectively. I'm a strong believer in constructive criticism. Speaking for myself, I've found my most effective mentors to be ones who expect a lot from me but who truly believe that I can meet those expectations. Personalized learning is key!

Journalism
Communication Tutoring
I major in journalism, which is closely related to communication studies. I've completed all fundamental courses as well as advanced classes such as Literary Journalism in a Digital Age and The Online Newsroom Experience. I've also worked as an active reporter for The Huntington News, WGBH News, the New England Newspaper and Press Association E-Bulletin and Woodlands Online.
English Tutoring
English was my favorite subject throughout my K-12 education. I entered college as an English major and have since completed an English minor with classes like Creative Nonfiction and Technologies of Text. My knowledge of literature, reading comprehension and writing is more advanced than that of most college students.
Literature Tutoring
After studying literature in high school (primarily American and British), I entered college as an English major, where most of my coursework was based on literature and reading comprehension. I studied the fundamentals, working with novels, plays and poems. I further studied the classics with a focus on Greek literature and have since completed an English minor.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
My reading comprehension skills are based in a combination of my English and journalism coursework. Literature requires a certain type of reading comprehension — how to identify figures of speech and patterns of grammar and writing. Journalism requires understanding how readers operate from the writer's point of view in order to make information accessible. I also performed well in my high school English classes and on standardized tests.
Study Skills Tutoring
For me as a college student, discipline in studying is key. I wasn't always disciplined: I grew up with many late nights, which were largely a result of ineffective time management. I can work with students using my personal experience to help them manage their time and organize themselves based on what strategies work best for them. I prefer calendars and day-by-day to-do lists, whereas others prefer gamified methods of organization (see habitica.com) or deadline-based calendars rather than progress-based ones.
Writing Tutoring
I'm well-versed in nearly all types of writing. With a major in journalism and minors in English, Spanish and history, not only can I write a variety of different news articles, but I can also write academic papers, cover letters and essays. What's more important, though, is that I know what goes into these types of writing, and I can teach the formulas needed to create full-fledged pieces for classes, applications and publication.

A veteran of many science fairs, I can help younger students through research methodology as well as memorization for classwork and exams.

PSAT Tutoring
I first took the PSAT in tenth grade and didn't score particularly well, except in writing. The following summer, I enrolled in an extremely helpful PSAT preparatory course. When I took the PSAT in eleventh grade, I outperformed my expectations, and I earned National Merit Scholar status. I am currently on a full-tuition scholarship at Northeastern University.
TOEFL Tutoring
I spent an aggregate 17 months working at National Geographic Learning, a textbook publishing company, on educational materials for ESL learners. There, I created and edited print and digital content for those preparing for the TOEFL. I also took practice TOEFLs in order to better understand the needs of our customers.
Adobe InDesign Tutoring
As layout and design editor of Spectrum, a literary arts magazine at Northeastern University, I used Adobe InDesign to create two magazines and a calendar. Now, I use InDesign to lay out The Huntington News, an independent, nonprofit newspaper. I've laid out the front page as well as the city, opinion and arts/entertainment sections.

I taught myself HTML and CSS through Codecademy nearly three years ago. Since then, I've created three fully functional websites. One is a personal project, and two were created for a client of mine — a Washington-based journalist.
