About Me

I graduated from Arizona State University with a BA in history in 2003, and then earned an MAEd in secondary education in 2006. I worked as a high school history teacher in Scottsdale, AZ from 2006 to 2010, and then moved to North Carolina to attend East Carolina University. I am currently finishing an MA in maritime studies, with a concentration in naval history.


I have tutored and worked as a teacher and/or teaching assistant at the middle school, high school, and university levels. In addition to teaching high school social studies, I also worked as a high school columbus">tutor during the 2008 - 2009 school year. I tutored a student before school in course content and study skills, and over the course of the year, she raised her course grade from an F to a B. During the summer of 2008, I worked as a teaching assistant in a middle school summer literacy program. The instructor and I helped students improve their test scores in reading-comprehension/ohio/columbus">reading comprehension and the raised the rate at which they could read and comprehend material. During my time as a graduate student at East Carolina University, I worked as both a graduate teaching assistant (TA), and a university columbus">tutor. During the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years, I served as a TA for an undergraduate history course (US history 1866-present). I held office hours, proctored exams, and assisted students with course content and study skills. During the 2012-2013 school year, I served as a lead history columbus">tutor for the university columbus">tutoring center. In this capacity, I facilitated exam reviews and taught study skills, reading-comprehension/ohio/columbus">reading comprehension, and time management and organization. During my time as a lead columbus">tutor, the students who attended columbus">tutoring at least three times over the course of the academic semester achieved a 100% pass rate.

I believe all students have the ability to succeed, and that low grades may indicate that a student may be struggling not only with the course content, but also the way in which the material is being taught in class or studied at home. My columbus">tutoring methods actively engage the student, and are done in a manner which best suites the student's learning style, ability level, and interests. By addressing these areas, the student can gain study, note taking, organization, and active learning skills which can improve not only his/her academic performance at home, but also in the classroom.
