Fun Facts

My greatest passions are for literature and music. A great story or a cleverly-constructed tune truly make me excited to share and analyze, and I enjoy being able to bring that enthusiasm to the table in education. I've studied music, literature, and history, both in school and independently. I also taught myself piano in high school and have performed playing and singing at open mics around town. Though it was not a priority in school, I delved into 19th century literature and loved it.

About Me

I'm a senior at EWU, soon to have my teaching certificate after student-teaching at Shadle Park High. Eventually, my current plan is to move to Alaska to help relieve the teacher shortage there and to benefit the students who tend to be underserved. While I may consider doing administrative work in the future, I believe that my passion for teaching will likely keep me as a high-school teacher for the foreseeable future.

Experience

Most of my experience has come from working with a 10th grade class at Shadle Park High, observing and teaching several lessons. Prior to that I've mentored students at church, especially in training for acapella choir. I've also worked a great deal with peers, helping to piece through difficult excerpts of texts or applying mathematical concepts and formulas. My greatest success has come just from teaching the discipline of perseverance, with which any subject can be grasped.

Approach

While I've learned a great deal in school, I've learned far more in independent research and study. In high school I generally felt like the system was holding me back, and so I completed the work I had to while focusing on more interesting pursuits. The better strategy, however, as I've found from teaching experiences, is to incorporate the students' interests into the teaching. Then they will continue to teach themselves inadvertently, which is a necessity for a great education.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

In my literature courses, I've helped many peers understand the more difficult texts we were asked to analyze. The piecemeal approach is often necessary, as well as the discipline of persistence, which is difficult to develop, but necessary. I've taken courses over all periods of American and British literature, scoring 3.0 or above, and am familiar with works of other cultures as well.

Study Skills Tutoring

The need to study was something I always struggled with as a primary and secondary school student. But working with students in the secondary education program has allowed me to practice keeping kids focused and I've learned how to mediate distractions to learning. The necessity of repetition even when it seems unhelpful, is a difficult truth for all students to accept, but I am learning how to communicate that concept.

My knowledge of the government comes largely from independent study and research rather than college classes. I succeeded especially well at ear-training. Though it is naturally easier for me, I've learned where the difficulty lies for others and have found that consistent practice can perfect this skill with anyone who is not absolutely tone-deaf.
