Fun Facts
Ever since I was little I have enjoyed running. I ran on cross-country and track teams all through high school and college. Running is still a part of my life and I am thankful I can take it wherever I go. I also love reading, scrapbooking, and trying new restaurants! Sushi is definitely a favorite of mine! I am the second oldest out of four children and grew up in northern Indiana. I just got married last June and love sharing life with my best friend.
About Me
I graduated from Bethel College with a degree in Elementary Education. I have taught in the elementary grades for 5 years now and have a passion helping children to read. After graduating college I took a course and became certified in the Orton-Gillingham reading method. Orton-Gillingham is geared toward students with dyslexia but lessons can be designed to help any student become a stronger reader.
Experience
I have my teachers license in the state of Alabama. I have taught fourth grade and have tutored students from grades Kindergarten to 6th grade. I am currently working on my masters and should be done with the program this coming fall. The degree is in reading curriculum with reading specialist certification. Working as a tutor for Frog Tutoring allows me to help and guide students toward success!
Approach
I feel it is important to get to know my students and how they learn best. It is important for me to see where a student is at so I can help them build off of what they already now. I place high expectations on all of my students and view them all as capable and knowledgeable. When designing my lessons I often include hands-on activities, read alouds with comprehension strategies , writing exercises, and enjoy using diagram or pictures when explaining content.

MastersEnglish Tutoring
Through my undergraduate and graduate coursework I have taken different classes which have prepared me to teach English in the elementary grades. I have also taught and tutored English in the elementary grades for 5 years now. Through professional development and my graduate work I am continually learning new skills and strategies to help my students succeed.
Homework Coach Tutoring
While working as an elementary school teacher I have helped students during and after school hours with their homework. I have also guided students to build responsibility through assignment notebooks and organization. While helping students with their homework it is important that they read and understand the directions. I also encourage them to refer back over class readings and notes.
Math Tutoring
I have taught math in the elementary grades for 5 years now. While teaching math I encourage my students to read the directions and show their work. I also place an emphasis on having my students become strong at their addition, subtraction, and multiplication flash cards. When they understand each of them and have them memorized the process of complex problems will come easier.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
Reading and reading comprehension is a passion of mine. After graduating college and getting my teachers license I decided to further my education in reading by become certified in the Orton-Gillingham reading method. The Orton-Gillingham (OG) program is a language-based, multisensory approach to help children with reading and math. It is an intensive phonics based system that teaches word formation through visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities. Originally a technique used with Dyslexic students, OG can now be integrated into classroom plans to help most children excel in reading. Lastly, my masters in centered on reading curriculum with certification as a reading specialist.
Writing Tutoring
Writing and reading go hand in hand. While teaching reading I place an emphasis on the writing process. Throughout my years of teaching I have learned about different writing programs and how to implement them in the classroom. It is important that writing is taught in a sequential way so the students can build off of what they already know.

Study Skills Tutoring
Through my years of teaching and tutoring I have come to see how study skills are. While working with my students I teach them how to pull apart questions to understand what is being asked. I also show students how to organize their notes in order to study for exams. While helping students study it is important for them to take practice tests while learning how to answer multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching, and short answer questions.
