I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and moved to Miami in August to start graduate school. Baseball is my favorite sport and I enjoying watching Dodger games and going to new MLB stadiums.

About Me

My name is Kareen Sanchez and I am currently a graduate student at the miami">University of Miami. I'm working on my Masters in Community Psychology, focusing on community youth development. I have a passion for education and enjoy working with children and youth in my community. Hopefully next summer, I will serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in youth development.

During August 2012-May 2013, I was a full-time City Year miami">tutor, mentor and role model at Thomas Jefferson High School in South Los Angeles. I provided one-on-one miami">tutoring and small group miami">tutoring in an Algebra 1 class, English 9 class, Academic Lit class and in City Year after school miami">tutoring. In addition, I created weekly lesson plan interventions for 11 freshmen focus list students who had attendance problems, socio-emotional behavior and failing grades. After a year, my student's grades, behavior and attendance improved. I still keep in touch with some of my students over email to make sure they are doing well personally and academically.

First in my miami">tutoring sessions, I like to introduce myself to the students and get to know them, such as asking them their names, interests and information about their school/teacher and HW. Then, I review the rules and expectations of the miami">tutoring session. We will review the material together and I will show them how to solve one question, we will solve another question together and then they will solve the rest of the HW by themselves. I will not give the students the answer, but rather be there as support and help whenever they need help. Finally at the end of the session, we will clean up and discuss the schedule/expectation for the next session.
