When I was in UT El Paso, I worked as a Writing austin">Tutor for two semesters in a row, teaching grammar rules and voice use to college students from all walks, from Freshmen to graduate students. Later, I spent one semester austin">tutoring college student athletes on many subjects, including English and Composition, History, Psychology, Political Science, and Spanish.

The last two years, from 2011 to 2013, I taught 8th grade Social Studies in Phoenix, Arizona. I also taught a reading-comprehension/texas/austin">reading comprehension class.

There are two main approaches I take while austin">tutoring. Firstly, if the student does not understand the concept at all, and it is necessary for me to teach or re-teach the concept, I will use the I-do, we do, you do. Basically, I will model the student the concept or skill, I will have the student help me with a few of these problems, I switch to helping the student while (s)he practices the skill, and then have the student do practice problems on their own.

When the student knows the concept but is shaky on it, I push the student to analyze the concept or skill in a higher level in Bloom's Taxonomy. This ensures that the student better understands and retains longer.
