Fun Facts
I LOVE playing sports! I juggled research, school work, school organizations, and D1 athletics as an undergraduate and I continue to play sports and help others in my spare time. I am the oldest of 4 and my parents and grandparents were all in the education field as teachers and principals. I've traveled to many different states and hope to travel the world after graduation.
About Me
I am a PhD/MSCI (Biomedical Sciences/Clinical Investigation) dual degree student at Northwestern University. I study abnormal heart rhythm disorders and how they are caused. I received my BS degree in Chemistry from Jackson State University in Mississippi with a 3.95 GPA and have been doing biomedical research for the past 8 years. I also volunteer for the American Heart Association and give talks in urban neighborhoods about heart disease and ways to live a healthier life.
Experience
As an undergraduate, I tutored math and science subjects for 2 years. I volunteered for the Chicago Scholars Program as a student mentor to help high school students get into college. I also mentor some of my fellow peers as a graduate student.
Approach
One approach I use to help motivate students is to provide encouragement and support. I like to provide real world examples and share strategies that I also use as a student. I am aware of various different learning styles and I like to use different methods depending on the student and their preferred way of learning. Methods used for one student may not be the same for the next. I also like to do frequent check-ins and check-outs to help keep my students on track.
