Fun Facts

I love dinosaurs! And I also really enjoying drawing and doodling - my teachers used to hate that I would draw instead of doing homework, but when I become a teacher, I plan on incorporating art into my lessons to make things more exciting. My passion outside of school is playing video games. I mostly stick to PC, but I'll play any genre. My parents always told me I need to play games less often, but frankly, I think it's a great way to socialize and build problem-solving skills.

About Me

I am a freshman English major at UTSA, planning to get my teacher's certification and teach at the high school level. While my GPA in high school was less than note-worthy, I have vastly improved it in college to a 3.75! I graduated high school as a member of the AVID program, and I believe strongly in their methods for tutoring. I received a score of 30 on my ACT, and have been accepted to my college's Dean's List, as well as invited to join honor societies like SCLA.

Experience

My first tutoring experience came at a very young age, when my fifth grade teacher asked me to help one of the first graders with numbers and the alphabet! After graduating high school, I went back as an AVID tutor for a year and discovered my passion for it. I am a strong proponent of the AVID system, and I incorporate its methodologies into tutoring whenever I can. I also have extensive experience writing essays at AP and collegiate levels.

Approach

I take a Socratic approach to tutoring: it isn't enough to just tell someone the answer, so I prefer to lead a student to make their own conclusions. This is a more meaningful way of learning, and it is the heart behind the AVID method. Furthermore, I know that some subjects are the absolute bane to a student's learning experience (for me, this is math!), so it is my goal to help a student succeed in those subjects which may normally hold them back.

Psychology Tutoring

I have taken Psychology classes in both high school and college, and have performed well at both levels. In college, I have participated in psychological surveys and studies, so I have first-hand experience as a test subject. Vocabulary comes easily to me, so I am able to help those who struggle with learning new terms and concepts. Overall, I enjoy this subject and will enjoy teaching it as well.

Geology Tutoring

Currently I am taking an earth science course, which deals in a broad sense, with not only geologic cycles, but other processes of Earth as well. I have consistently performed well with this subject material, maintaining an A throughout the course, and I even tutor my fellow classmates whenever we have an upcoming test. My experience teaching those alongside whom I learn as well affords me a greater understanding of the subject material than I would gain alone.

English Tutoring

I have taken Writing Comprehension, Literary Criticism, and Education courses, and have performed well in all of them. As an English major, I am apt to teach this subject to other college students. I am capable of tutoring both inexperienced and accomplished students.

Writing Tutoring

I have received an A on every essay that I have written so far! I often visit my college's writing center in order to improve my own performance, and I have the skills to pass this experience on to others at a high academic level. I am experienced with MLA and APA format, as well as the expectations that many college courses have for writing comprehension and ability.

AP English Tutoring

I took both AP Language and Composition and AP Literary Criticism and Analysis, receiving a score of 4 on the AP Language test. Because I did not take the AP Literary Criticism test, I am now taking the course again in college. Because of this, I have ample experience in AP English courses, from writing, to analysis, to critical thinking.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I am currently taking a literary criticism and analysis course, so I have current experience with subject material pertaining to reading comprehension. I have received As on all assignments so far dealing with critical analysis of both fiction and non-fiction.

Writing Advance Tutoring

Because I graduated as an AP student, and because I am an English major, I have experience writing at the college level. I also have an MYP background, which allows me a more versatile approach to teaching advanced writing.

Study Skills Tutoring

I have developed study skills in college that I believe I can impart to those younger and with less experience than me. I have taken Psychology, Academic Inquiry, and Education courses that provide plenty of methods for improving study skills. Furthermore, I graduated four years of the AVID program, which teaches important academic habits such as binder organization, Cornell note-taking, and Socratic problem-solving.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I have been analyzing literature since my high school days when I took AP English literature and language classes. Today I am taking similar classes, which improve upon my understanding. Because I am an English major, I am well practiced in analyzing and responding to literature, and I am able to pass this understanding along to others.

Study Skills Tutoring

As an AVID graduate, I built a strong foundation for organizational skills and study habits. I am familiar with the Socratic method, Cornell note style, and binder and planner organization. Furthermore, I practice these study skills every day, so I am very capable of helping others self-motivate and build habits that will lead to their own academic success.

Anatomy Physiology I Tutoring

I performed well in my own Anatomy and Physiology courses, and in fact, I even have my own anatomy encyclopedia! I am capable of tutoring this subject not only because I am passionate about it, but also because it relates to my degree: anatomy is often vocab-heavy, and as an English-centered tutor, I have a strong understanding of how to teach vocabulary. It also deals with tangible concepts which I can easily comprehend and thus, I can better teach these concepts to others.

Arts Tutoring

Before I decided to become a teacher, I wanted to work with digital art. I have always been a creative type: I read, I draw in pencil and on a tablet, I write in all manner of style and genre, and occasionally I use free music-making programs to experiment with sound. Art is sometimes a difficult subject to teach, because it is not ass concrete as some other core classes, however I believe that even if a person does not think of themselves as an artistic type, art theory and style can certainly be taught. I am just as qualified to teach arts as any student is to connect with their creative side.

Spanish I Tutoring

I began taking Spanish classes when I was in elementary school, and continued these classes all through middle school, and then two years in high school, and I will be taking two more semesters in college. In short, I have plenty of experience writing, reading, and speaking the language. While my grades in Spanish may not have been exemplary, my teachers consistently praised my accent and ability to grasp the subject material. At the high school level, I will be capable of helping students with conjugation, pronunciation, and vocabulary: all core aspects of learning the language.

Spanish Tutoring

In my experience, middle school Spanish deals primarily with verb conjugation, vocabulary, practicing the alphabet and pronunciation, as well as the beginnings of sentence structure and simple conversation. I am qualified to tutor in this area because I spent the vast majority - from elementary to high school - of my school years taking Spanish classes, and I intend to take more classes in college. As a person whose studies focus on language arts, I will certainly be able to help students with Spanish.
