Fun Facts
I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and I love to surf, hike and spend time outdoors. I attended Punahou School, where Barack Obama graduated, from grades 4-12. My favorite hobby is swimming and I was a varsity swimmer throughout high school and college. I love to travel with my family and friends and have been fortunate enough to visit 13 countries! My favorite part of travel is experiencing a medley of culture and customs and indulging in local cuisine!
About Me
I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in December 2017 with a Research Emphasis Biology degree, a minor in psychology and Latin Honors. I will begin medical school in August and am looking to continue my passion of educating in the gap semester. I've been employed for 2.5 years as a researcher at an immunology lab led by Wash U's MD/PhD director. I took 4 years of honors Mandarin in high school, inspired by my swim coach from Shanghai. My career goal lies in academic medicine.
Experience
In high school, I was a 2-year AP Biology teaching assistant, mentored by the director of the biology department. I also worked with her to create a Bioengineering lab-based course, collaborating with University of Hawaii to select curriculum materials. Currently, I am the director of a YMCA GED tutor program, volunteer trainer, and YMCA executive cabinet member. I'm also an assistant instructor in a 400-level Biology course, under Wash U's named professor of biology.
Approach
Nothing entices me more than team work, collaboration and constructive feedback. My passion for swimming taught me interpersonal, leadership and cohesive teaching strategies. When mentoring, I like to focus on efficient and complete study strategies. I find that the best way to learn is to understand, rather than memorize, and place each topic into its contextual category. I use positive feedback and recommendations, catering each session to the student's study strengths.
