Fun Facts

In my free time, I enjoy knitting and cooking. I also read books for review for a fiction company, and those reviews get used by the published in marketing materials upon the book's publication. I am an avid sports fan, although I don't play sports. I enjoy American football, hockey, baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, and NASCAR.

About Me

I was raised in the Midwest, went to grad school in Philadelphia — withdrawing from law school and subsequently earning a master's in public health with a 3.53 GPA — and I recently moved back to the Midwest for family reasons.

I began tutoring in undergrad, helping out some of my College Algebra classmates, which is when I realized that I enjoyed tutoring. I liked being able to approach learning from a different perspective and seeing people comprehend something that they were previously confused by. I also used to teach part-time at a vo-tech school, and I would tutor students outside of regular classroom hours.

I like to begin by trying to understand why the student is having difficulties. Is it because they find the material boring, they don't understand the material at all, or because they believe they do but find they are wrong when tested? Once I understand that, I can build my strategy to help the student. I can break the material down into smaller components, help the student understand that material is relatable to what they want to do (i.e., can be fun), or help them self-test as they go.

Experience

I tutored students throughout undergrad and grad school in various subjects. I also taught in a vo-tech school before becoming a formal Teaching Assistant in one of my graduate programs. I currently teach ESL / ELL students and am guiding one of my students to be able to pass the TOEFL so he can resume undergrad studies in this country.

Approach

I keep lessons fun and engaging by incorporating games and using the interests my learner has. In math, we can add touchdowns, safeties, and PATs. We can practice subtraction by taking away penalty yardage. In reading and writing, the possibilities are endless. I want learners to realize that learning can be fun and not just sitting at a desk and memorizing things. That's what good teachers did for me, and that's what I want to do for others -- particularly for those who need a bit of help.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I have taught health policy, which includes how to read policies in order to parse them correctly. I have also tutored people in English, Literature, and Composition. Since I was a child, I read well-above my grade level and always helped other students who needed assistance in class.

Writing Tutoring

I have attended law school (where my favorite class was Legal Research & Writing) and in my graduate program, I taught health policy and writing. I enjoy helping people learn how to write differently depending on the audience and the need (creatively, technically, etc.), and I also enjoy teaching people how to proofread and edit their own work. I once proofread a textbook aimed at attorneys due to my sharp eye for grammar.

ESL Tutoring

I have been teaching English language learners for some time now, and I am now earning my TESOL certificate (I am halfway through the 150-hour program). I enjoy helping people be able to learn and comprehend another language, especially to be able to pass the TOEFL, which is generally a step to going to university. Once a person can pass the TOEFL, I enjoy seeing the person go on to be admitted to university and get closer to their career goal.
