Fun Facts

A fun fact about me is that I play the piano. While I don't have one in my apartment, I enjoy playing when I visit my home in New Jersey, where I grew up. Music is important to me, and a way to relax, whether playing myself or listening to something new on Spotify. I also played clarinet in school! Art is also an important part of my life and I try to incorporate creativity into my teaching.

About Me

I just finished at Brooklyn College, where I was studying Education, both general and special for grades K-6. I was an art major in college and decided to follow my passion of working with children. I remember what it was like to struggle in school and I have tried to learn and draw from those experiences and bring them into teaching in constructive and meaningful ways. I have also worked with adults teaching ESL.

Experience

As mentioned, my training is in education and I have had a variety of experiences tutoring, volunteering and teaching in different classroom settings over the years. Most of this experience has been teaching children in academic subjects, though I am passionate about promoting creative thinking. I have met many interesting people, of backgrounds and cultures different from my own, which have impacted my training and self-knowledge to support all students.

Approach

My approach is to build a strong partnership built on trust and respect when working with a child. Informally, I have found simply talking to a student on their level about what is going on is so important, while encouraging them and building on their own interests and curiosity in learning. Once I get to know a child better and his/her strengths and interests, I try to incorporate this into areas of difficulty, while working to teach from a culturally relevant perspective.

Algebra Tutoring

I was a strong math student, and found algebra to be fun in school, while other subjects were more difficult for me. I believe all students can enjoy math when it is taught in ways that are approachable and involve strategy and creative problem solving, as well as games which can support building fluency with numbers.

History Tutoring

I believe I did not appreciate learning history and social studies in school for the way it is taught. Meanwhile, I have discovered that this was not due to the subject matter but the way it was taught. There are many materials available now to teachers and students which can make history dynamic and truthful.

Homework Coach Tutoring

I have helped students with homework in after school programs, and through tutoring. I know personally and through working with students how overwhelming homework can be. As a homework coach, I would support teaching organization and time management as a way of making the tasks of completing homework less stressful. In general, I would support students to reinforce what was taught and in doing so, identify areas that need more focus.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Reading comprehension is a difficult skill, and one which I struggled with and know well. During my teaching program, identifying underlying learning issues or particular areas of weakness that need support would be where I'd start. To build stamina, a student needs to feel confident. Choosing a way of processing the material that supports students' needs and breaking down readings would both draw on his/her strengths while developing his/her ability to understand broad ideas communicated in shorter passages, then longer ones.

Science Tutoring

During my student teaching, I developed and taught a unit on animal adaptation which was really interesting and fun to me. It allowed me to see how curious students were. I had the chance to develop hands-on learning and begin to draw on their prior knowledge, which is a core aspect of science. In addition, this work allowed me to learn about and access many materials and resources that can be used to supplement and make science a more dynamic subject.

Study Skills Tutoring

Studying special education, I have picked up tools to support students to develop skills which make learning more structured, manageable and/or accessible so they can develop their own self-efficacy. Teaching them the importance of being aware of the way they learn, and empowering them to develop and see how certain skills can support their learning at a young age; are important to developing feeling a sense of control over learning.

Writing Tutoring

I briefly taught non-fiction writing during my student teaching, which I learned involved a great range of skills. Improving writing involves developing students' ability to organize their ideas, or supporting and building their orthographic skills, and generally working on communicating and/or expressing themselves. This subject was and has always been a difficult process for me and has given me perspective as far as understanding how to manage the stress and anxiety of writing.

Elementary Math Tutoring

Math is a subject I was passionate and strong in during my school years, and I believe all students have the capacity to enjoy math, whether it is a strong subject for them or not. I have studied techniques which can make math fun and approachable, using number games, fluency strategies which allow students to find their own ways to find the answer and making math multi-disciplinary through art, reading or student's particular passion.
