Fun Facts

I was raised in a Military family (my mother retired as a Captain in the US Navy) so I got to travel a good amount of the country as a child. I spent years as an amateur bowler continuing to North Carolina State, where I competed for 4 years. In the 7th grade, my parents got me my first guitar, and ever since, I have had a passion for the guitar and music. Additionally, I have performed stand up comedy over the past few years, using it as an opportunity to improve my communication skills.

About Me

I am a 6th year PhD student in Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State. My career goal is to gain experience at a national laboratory before returning to Academia as a full time professor. My current research involves solving inverse problems in nuclear detection.

Experience

During the first years of my graduate studies, I took every opportunity I could to be a teachers assistant in both the classroom and laboratory setting. Upon completion of my Masters in 2011, I worked for 3 years for Bechtel building Nuclear Power Plants in Alabama and Tennessee. In 2014, I stepped away to pursue my PhD with the ultimate goal of becoming a professor at a major university.

Approach

Many times I have been asked to help friends and family in math and science classes. The most common question that they ask me is, "when will I ever use this?" After years of fighting with this answer, I learned to embrace it and focus my lessons into using subjects that everyone knows. I love seeing the light bulb go off in the minds of students when they realize they already know algebra when related to sports or shopping.

Calculus I Tutoring

My first experience with Calculus in college was Calculus III (I received a 5 test score on the AB and BC AP Calculus exams in high school). In the Nuclear Engineering field, Calculus is used extensively and I have used my knowledge to help undergraduate students and friends achieve a higher understanding of the subject.

Calculus 2 Tutoring

My first experience with Calculus in college was Calculus III (I received a 5 test score on the AB and BC AP Calculus exams in high school). In the Nuclear Engineering field, Calculus is used extensively and I have used my knowledge to help undergraduate students and friends achieve a higher understanding of the subject.

College Algebra Tutoring

Algebra is a subject that I use in every day life, from setting a line up in fantasy football to grocery shopping. My first experiences with algebra were in an advanced math group in 5th grade. My main focus is to strip away the language of algebra and introduce students to real world problems that they already know, and then reintroduce the math language.

Math Tutoring

Math is a subject that I use in every day life, from setting a line up in fantasy football to grocery shopping. My main focus is to strip away the language and introduce students to real world problems that they already know, and then introduce the math language. As a Nuclear Engineer with hobbies in music and sports, there are endless situations of math in my life, and those are all opportunities I can share with students.

Physics I Tutoring

I have tutored many students in Physics at both the high school and undergraduate level. Physics is the basis of Nuclear Engineering, which I have spend my career working and studying in. I approach teaching physics by starting with visualizing the problem, before setting up the mathematics and ultimately solving the problem.

Physics II Tutoring

I have tutored many students in Physics at both the high school and undergraduate level. Physics is the basis of Nuclear Engineering, which I have spend my career working and studying in. I approach teaching physics by starting with visualizing the problem, before setting up the mathematics and ultimately solving the problem.

Pre Calculus Tutoring

Pre Calculus is all about refining the tools needed to begin learning Calculus. Relying on fundamentals in trigonometry, algebra, and geometry, I can use my decades of study to prepare students to gain the knowledge and confidence to become successful.
